Provision of nutrients in balanced form and required amount is crucial to meet the productive targets in dairy cows. Among the various nutrients, protein is the most important nutrient for milk production. Methionine and lysine are considered as the first and second limiting amino acids for milk protein synthesis because of their low concentrations in feed protein as compared to their concentrations in milk and ruminally synthesized bacterial protein. Choline, a component of phospholipid and methyl donor, plays an essential role in biosynthesis and secretion of milk.

Animal husbandry practices like sheep and goat rearing offer many advantages for beginners and also experienced farmers. They are well suited and productive for the prevailing agro-climatic conditions in India. In mammals, health status is governed by the organ of lymphatic system. Though spleen is the secondary lymphatic organ, it is the largest among the lymphoid organs which plays a crucial role in immune function. Ruminants, such as dairy cows, can very well utilize NPN (see Chapter 2). Hence, instead of feeding dairy cows expensive (true) protein, cheaper sources of nitrogen can be used as well. Urea which is relatively cheap chemical product, is such a non-protein nitrogen. However, certain precautionary rules must be observed when feeding non-protein nitrogen to dairy cows. It should be realized, that NPN (urea) can only be used in low level production systems with high amounts of poor quality roughage. In feeding high yielding dairy cows, this NPN does not play a significant role.
