  • Livestock play an important role as reservoir of enteric pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a health and economic concern worldwide. However, little is known regarding the transmission and maintenance of these pathogens at the wildlife-livestock interface.

  • Ruminants play a great role in sustainable livestock since they transform pastures, silage, and crop residues into high-quality human food (i.e. milk and beef). Animals with better ability to convert food into animal protein, measured as a trait called feed efficiency (FE), also produce less manure and greenhouse gas per kilogram of produced meat.

  • The ureagenesis plays a central role in the homeostatic control of nitrogen metabolism. This process occurs in the liver, the key metabolic organ in the maintenance of energy homeostasis in the body. To date, the understanding of the influencing factors and regulators of ureagenesis in ruminants is still poor.

  • Micro RNAs have been recognized to play vital role in viral replication and pathogenesis. Circulatory miRNAs found in body fluid in stable, cell free form may be correlated with different stages of Peste des Petits Ruminanats (PPR) infection. The present study was focused to profile expression of circulatory miR-21-3p in serum of PPRV infected and apparently healthy goats in natural condition.

  • Provision of nutrients in balanced form and required amount is crucial to meet the productive targets in dairy cows. Among the various nutrients, protein is the most important nutrient for milk production. Methionine and lysine are considered as the first and second limiting amino acids for milk protein synthesis because of their low concentrations in feed protein as compared to their concentrations in milk and ruminally synthesized bacterial protein. Choline, a component of phospholipid and methyl donor, plays an essential role in biosynthesis and secretion of milk.

  • Animal husbandry practices like sheep and goat rearing offer many advantages for beginners and also experienced farmers. They are well suited and productive for the prevailing agro-climatic conditions in India. In mammals, health status is governed by the organ of lymphatic system. Though spleen is the secondary lymphatic organ, it is the largest among the lymphoid organs which plays a crucial role in immune function. For the present study, splenic tissue from adult sheep and goat (6 Nos. each) were collected from Corporation slaughter house, Chennai.

  • Ruminants, such as dairy cows, can very well utilize NPN (see Chapter 2). Hence, instead of feeding dairy cows expensive (true) protein, cheaper sources of nitrogen can be used as well. Urea which is relatively cheap chemical product, is such a non-protein nitrogen. However, certain precautionary rules must be observed when feeding non-protein nitrogen to dairy cows. It should be realized, that NPN (urea) can only be used in low level production systems with high amounts of poor quality roughage. In feeding high yielding dairy cows, this NPN does not play a significant role.
