Infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus have a poorer prognosis when the infecting strain is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) additionally MRSA strains are important for their resistance to many other commonly used antibiotics. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of MRSA strains in clinical specimens and to investigate their sensitivity pattern. A total of 480 various samples received in the department of Microbiology at MIMER Medical college and hospital, Talegaon were included in the study.

Blood stream infections are very common in paediatric age group and are one of the common causes of morbidity and mortality. Septicaemia gradually leads to serious consequences like shock, multi organ failure, DIC etc. Timely identification of causative pathogen by blood culture (gold standard) is important. Antibiogram also helps us to elevate consciousness on resistance problems and recognise prospect to decrease the use of inappropriate antibiotics. The study was undertaken to evaluate major bacterial isolates causing septicaemia and their antibiogram pattern.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a highly troublesome pathogen for many institutions globally. As a consequence of its immense ability to acquire or upregulate antibiotic drug resistance determinants, it has justifiably been propelled to the forefront of scientific attention. The clinical specimens over a period of 3 years (January 2014 to December 2016) were analyzed and the A. baumannii isolates obtained by an automated identification system (Vitek 2 Compact) were segregated for further study.

The main objective is to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of MCRA and TAM against TCP method. A total of 50 Staphylococcus aureus strains resistance to methicillin and Ciprofloxacin from all clinical isolates from April 2015 to March 2016 was subjected to biofilm detection methods. Out of 50 S. aureus resistant to methicillin and ciprofloxacin, 26(52%) were found to be biofilm producers.

The study was done in Department of Microbiology, RMC, Loni. The clinical samples were subjected to Gram staining, aerobic culture using MacConkey and blood agar. Acinetobacter species were identified by standard microbiological identification methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion technique and according to CLSI guidelines.

The study showed an increased prevalence of MRSA among the inpatients when compared to the outpatients. A single intervention will unlikely to have a significant impact on attenuating MRSA infection rates. Multifactorial bundled approach is the need of the hour in containing the MRSA infections along with robust antimicrobial stewardship and prompt infection control measures and judicious use of the drugs of choice for MRSA infection which have to be preserved for the future use.

In the last decade a number of tests were developed and used for early detection of sepsis yet blood culture remains a gold standard in establishing diagnosis of sepsis according to 1992-2001 definition which gives an emphasis on the role of microbes in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Thus this study was aimed at isolating and identifying bacterial and/or fungal agents from blood culture of the patients diagnosed clinically as having sepsis.

The rapid emergence of resistance against the antibiotics by bacteria poses a threat to the health and health benefits that can be obtained by the use of antibiotics. This problem is worldwide and it reflects on the overuse of these drugs and lack of development of new drugs for combating this situation. Moreover infections due to such resistant bacteria add to the cost of healthcare in any nation.

This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of nasal carriage of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and its Mupirocin resistance in health care providers (HCPs). Sterile swabs from the anterior nares of the HCPs were collected and then transported to the Microbiology laboratory for processing. The Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) isolates were tested for Methicillin resistance on Mueller Hinton agar using Cefoxitin disc (30ug) by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method.

Otomycosis is an acute, subacute or chronic fungal infection of the external auditory canal. It is worldwide in distribution with a higher prevalence in the hot, humid, and dusty areas of the tropics and subtropics. A wide variety of fungi can cause Otomycosis. In this study, our aim was to determine the most common mode of presentation, predisposing factors, and the spectrum of fungi involved in Otomycosis. 60 Ear discharge samples were collected aseptically using two sterile cotton swabs. One swab was used for direct microscopic examination and used for fungal culture.

Neonatal sepsis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns and is responsible for 30 – 50 % of total neonatal deaths. Multidrug resistant Gram negative bacilli belonging to the family Enterobcteriaceae have been increasingly responsible for infections among the neonates admitted to the NICU in many countries including India. The study was conducted to know prevalence of ESBL production in Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli in NICU so that we can help clinicians to avoid injudicious use of antibiotics.

Inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva is known as conjunctivitis. Bacterial infections account for up to 50-70% of all conjunctivitis cases. Bacterial conjunctivitis is common and affects all age groups. Clinical evaluation and microbiological analysis is valuable for specific treatment. This study was undertaken to elicit bacterial profile and their antibiotic susceptibility of conjunctivitis. This study was carried out in the departments of Ophthalmology and Microbiology of Mediciti Institute of Medical Sciences, Ghanpur, Hyderabad for period of 3 months.

Vast majority of active tuberculosis patients seeks treatment, do so promptly, still many patients spend a great deal of time and money “shopping for health” and too often they do not receive either accurate diagnosis or effective treatment, despite spending considerable resources. Objective: To find out the time taken to, for diagnosis of tuberculosis and to put patient on DOTS from the onset of symptoms and pattern of health seeking behavior of new pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
