Screening of soybean genotypes

The effective use of mutant populations for reverse genetic screens relies on the population-wide characterization of the induced mutations. Genome- and population-wide characterization of the mutations found in fast neutron populations has been hindered, however, by the wide range of mutations generated and the lack of affordable technologies to detect DNA sequence changes.

Charcoal rot and Aerial alight caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid and Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, respectively are major biotic challenges across the country in soybean cultivation. The problem of disease can be overcome nicely by growing resistant variety and using integrated disease management practices. In this concern, for the identification of resistant source, total sixty genotypes including five check varieties namely Shivalik, JS 335, JS 95-60, JS 93-05 and NRC 7 were evaluated under high disease pressure during kharif 2019.

Soybean has great potential as an exceptionally nutritive and very rich protein food, which is one of the five most important oil seed crops of the world. Over hundreds of pathogens are known to affect soybean, of which 66 fungi, six bacteria and eight viruses have reported to be associated with soybean seeds. In India, losses due to various diseases are estimated as 12% of total production.

Forty-three genotypes of soybean were screened for soybean yellow mosaic virus disease (SYMV) under glasshouse condition using viruliferous whiteflies (Bemesia tabaci) through artificial virus inoculation method. Among 43 genotypes none of the genotypes were found highly resistance to the disease. Eleven genotypes viz.

Salinity has negative impact on plants such as poor germination, reduction in root length, reduction in shoot length and adverse effect on early seedling growth. In order to study the effect of salinity (NaCl 180 mM) on seed germination of soybean, an experiment was conducted to screen 82 diverse soybean genotypes. The results revealed that salinity stress caused by NaCl reduced both germination percentage and seedling growth of soybean varieties. Genotypes differed significantly in terms of tolerance to salinity.

The occurrence of drought stress at seed filling stage is known to cause severe yield reduction in soybean especially where the crop is grown in rainfed conditions. Screening of large germplasm lines under natural drought conditions is extremely difficult to execute due to unusual rains. In the present study, about 328 germplasm lines are screened for terminal drought tolerance by spraying 0.2% of potassium iodide (KI) at R5 stage and the tolerant lines were again retested under similar conditions in the subsequent year.
