  • Screening of okra genotypes was carried out under four different environments for shoot and fruit borer, yellow vein mosaic virus disease and enation leaf curl virus disease. The genotypes responded differently to different environments against different insect-pests and diseases. None of the genotype was found free from shoot and fruit borer infection, YVMV and ELCV incidence. However the genotypes that were found with some degree of resistance might be used for future breeding programmes.

  • This study was thus undertaken to assess genetic diversity among the different parents used for hybridization and confirmation of hybrids of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) by using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. RAPD profiles for 11 genotypes were generated with 20 random decamer primers. Out of 20 primers screened 15 primers gave scorable DNA fragments and each of the 15 primers revealed various levels of polymorphism. These primers generated 476 DNA fragments in the average range of 167bp to 3300bp, of which 367 were polymorphic.

  • The present study was carried out to assessment of genetic diversity and screening of sheath blight at the Research Farm of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, N.D. University of Agriculture & Technology, Narendra Nagar (Kumarganj), Faizabad. Results revealed that 22 genotypes were grouped into five different non-overlapping clusters. Cluster V, having 6 genotypes, emerged with highest number of entries. The maximum intra-cluster distance was found for cluster II (325.16) and highest inter-cluster distance was recorded between cluster IV and V (32140.59).

  • A field study was conducted to screen out six important tomato genotypes for resistance/ tolerance against important sucking pests and their natural enemies under West Bengal conditions. Aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) were first appeared on the crop in third week of January and second week of February respectively. The peak populations of both the pest were reached in the third to fourth week of February.

  • Chilli (Capsicum annuum) is an important spice as well as vegetable crop that are grown throughout the world especially in tropical and subtropical regions. India is a major producer, exporter and consumer of chilli. Chilli is grown in almost all states. Anthracnose disease can occur on leaves, stems, and both pre and post-harvest fruits. It is one of the major and devastating diseases of chilli causes severe losses (10-60%) both in yield and quality of the chilli depending upon the varieties. Diseases are the major problem for successful cultivation of chilli in India.

  • Sorghum is an essential crop in the semi-arid tropics being attacked by nearly 150 species of insects, out of which Chilo partellus is the more devastating pest. Based on the foliar damage the resistance and susceptible genotypes of sorghum can be screened. For further understanding of the host plant resistance relationship between sorghum and stem borer the orientation behaviour and larval establishment behaviour can be studied. The host plant resistance in sorghum to C. partellus can be either morphological or biochemical.

  • Salinity has negative impact on plants such as poor germination, reduction in root length, reduction in shoot length and adverse effect on early seedling growth. In order to study the effect of salinity (NaCl 180 mM) on seed germination of soybean, an experiment was conducted to screen 82 diverse soybean genotypes. The results revealed that salinity stress caused by NaCl reduced both germination percentage and seedling growth of soybean varieties. Genotypes differed significantly in terms of tolerance to salinity.

  • Tomato is one of the most popular and widely grown vegetables in the world which ranks next to potato. Although tomato is generally grown under irrigated conditions, its cultivation as a rainfed crop has gained importance particularly in semi-arid regions. It has been established that stress due to water deficit is a very important limiting factor at the initial phase of plant growth and establishment. Studies on physiological evaluation of tomato genotypes is limiting in the drought stress condition.
