The microbial ecology of an outdoor artwork gallery was evaluated using basic microbiological standardize techniques. The sculptures made up of wood, cement and cast metal had a mean heterotrophic bacterial count of; wood (3.2×104 ), cement (4.3×104 ) and metal (2.5×104 ) while the fungal count were wood (4.6×104 ), cement (2.7×104 ) and metal (1.8×104 ) colonies forming unit per milliliter of the scrapped solutions.

Program Director Michele Cohen maintains “consulting a conservator in the process of designing a public sculpture is a precautionary measure which can only result in a more durable finished product. We can’t foresee all problems, but we can certainly minimize them by thoroughly investigating materials and fabrication methods.” Preserving the integrity of the artwork should be the highest priority during the design process. In the United States, federal and state laws address issues of preservation and artists’ and moral rights.

The sense of feeling can effectively be used to enforce virtual artistic activities like virtual sculpting or modeling. In this paper, we describe how a virtual sculpture system has been extended with haptical feedback. In practice, we use the scalar field defining the implicit surface being modeled to efficiently compute several type of force feedback. We present a method for combining these forces differently depending whether the user is just touching his artwork or editing it by adding virtual matter.

Like every artistic process, virtual sculpture (see figure 1 for example), requires a strong interaction between the artist and his artwork. Feeling the material being modeled enforces the metaphor of sculpting and the immersion of the user, making the creative activity easier. The need for haptic feedback is even stronger when the user visualizes his 3D sculpture on a standard screen: without force feedback, correctly positioning an editing tool with respect to the sculpture is difficult, since it may require changing the viewpoint several times to check the tool’s position....

The Australian National University International Sculpture Park is an extension of the University’s impressive commissioned artworks program. Located on the beautiful Acton Peninsula at the south end of the campus, the Park embraces the Old Canberra House precinct and extends across undulating grassy slopes and gullies and open woodlands, to the shore of Lake Burley Griffin.
