Sea dike

Mangrove plants play a viral role in protecting the coast, retraining erosion. Especially in areas considered the variable wave conditions, complex dynamic conditions such as the coastal region of Hai Phong city. However, due to various reasons, the development/additional planting of mangrove forests in the coastal area of Hai Phong in some locations has not achieved the desired result.

The thesis will solve the following two basic objectives: Clarifying the effect of hydrodynamic and geometric factors on the current velocity due to wave at the dike toe by using rocks; Determining the formula to calculate the maximum flow velocity at the foot of the embankment (dike toe), then select the solution to design the structure of the foot protection of the embankment in both with or without roughness structures

The thesis aims to investigate the influence of low crown-walls on overtopping discharge and the behaviour of overtopping flow at sea dikes. By doing so, the reliability of overtopping estimation is increased to improve the dike design guidelines currently applied in Viet Nam.

Toe erosion, especially in stormy conditions, is one of the common mechanism causing the failure and instability of the sea dikes and revetments. The erosion intensity becomes more serious at the beaches which is under the impacts of typhoons. Reliable forecasts about the intensity of toe erosion of sea dikes in stormy conditions have important ecnomomic and technical meaning in the design and construction of sea dikes.
