This study presents some research results on the relationship between the geological environment of the surface layer and the level of modern tectonic activity in the sea waters of the Hoi An - Cua Dai area based on the interpretation of high-resolution shallow seismic data combined with the surface sediments’ grainsize analysis and other available data sources. The results show that the surface geological environment in the coastal waters North of the Thu Bon river fault is influenced by modern tectonic activities, believed to be a part of causing geological catastrophic events.

This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of 61 marine fungal strains isolated from 34 samples collected in the research journey of the Akademik Oparin vessel in the North Sea of Vietnam in 2021. Of these, 23 were from sponges, 21 from seaweeds, 15 from sediments, and only 2 from seawater.

The weak cohesion of the sediment materials often causes localized surface slumping phenomena with significant amplitudes, extending up to several meters, disrupting the equilibrium trend of sedimentation and leading to an accumulation of sediment towards the dam intake culvert. These observations provide insights into the dynamics of the reservoir surface sediment environment, while also demonstrating that current reservoir operation and exploitation conditions can ensure the longevity and safety as per the design of the Cua Dat Hydroelectric project.

The sediment quality assessment showed that trace element concentrations were lower than the limited values in the sediment quality guideline (QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT). According to the Igeo index, the sediments were not polluted by Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Fe, and As but were likely polluted by Hg and Mn in some sampling sites. Therefore, it is necessary to invest the future studies to assess the Hg and Mn concentration levels in these sites to protect the marine environment.

The Cuu Long delta is affected strongly by mass water from rivers of the MeKong river system such as Tieu, Dai, Ham Luong, Co Chien, Cung Hau, Dinh An and Tranh De (Hau river). The estuaries of Cuu Long delta are large with a huge amount of sediment (about 100 million tons per year) and high tide (about 4.2m) made the large tidal flats with high level of biodiversity, which is an important resource for aquaculture.

Northern Song Hong Tertiary Sedimentary basin is a classic case study of a pull-apart basin in southeast Asia, whose formation was controlled by the India-Eurasia collision, sinistral and dextral strike-slip motion of the Ailao Shan-Red River Shear Zone and Opening of the East Vietnam Sea during the Cenozoic. The Oligocene Ruslar Formation, an equivalent of the Maykop Suite, is a potential hydrocarbon source rock in the western Black Sea Basin. In contrast to the offshore areas, the depositional environment and hydrocarbon source rock potential of onshore Bulgaria sediments are largely unknown. Hence, a 14-m-thick section of the Ruslar Formation, exposed near Karadere (Black Cape) along the Black Sea coast, provides an excellent opportunity to study the upper part of the Ruslar Formation.

The antibacterial agent triclosan (TCS) is added to many daily-used consumer products and can therefore reach the aquatic environment via treated wastewater and potentially harm aquatic ecosystems. The sedimentary record confirmed that microplastics have been accumulating in these estuaries since the early 1950s, and their abundances have increased greatly in more recent years in response to the progressive urbanization of the watersheds and intensification of land uses. Kim Son coastal plain is a part of the Red River Delta located between Day and Can rivers. Over the past 55 years, Kim Son coastal plain has been the region with the highest accretion rate in the Red River Delta. This study aims to clarify the sediment characteristics of Kim Son coastal plain. It has the structure of a typical tidal flat and a relatively straightforward tide-influenced sedimentary structure evidenced by the field observation, sampling 70 hand-drilled boreholes, borehole logging and analyzing 177 samples of grain size.

The results also showed that Ha Thanh and Rach Lo sites recorded the highest contents of most studied metals in oyster samples. Levels of metals in oyster were in the order of Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cr > Cd > Hg and the contents of metals in oyster did not reflect a correlation with those in surrounding environment.
