The genetic nature of character association for various traits was studied in Rabi sorghum using F2 populations derived from four crosses of M 35-1 with specialty varieties viz., AKJ-1 (flaking), KMJ - 1 (popping), and SMJ-1 & RSJ-1 (hurda purpose). These varieties derived from landraces are recommended for cultivation in Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka.

The present investigation was carried out to study the magnitude of genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient among 20 traits in ten amaranthus accessions belonging to Amaranthus tricolor. Comparison of genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic co-efficient variation (PCV) for different traits indicated that the values of PCV were higher as compared to GCV due to the influence of environment. High GCV and PCV were observed for leaf length, leaf breadth, stem weight, seed yield per plant and anthocyanin content.

An image analysis technique is well suited for the collection of data concerning the shape and size of the seeds. Such morphological data is often used for establishing the distinctness of new varieties. Seed morphometric characters like seed length, breadth, length to breadth ratio (seed shape) and thousand seed weight were determined for hundred rice genotypes by using Biovis image analyser.

The experiment “studies on collection and evaluation of genetic variability available in Amaranthus under Chhattisgarh plain condition” was conducted at Horticulture Research cum Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) during Rabi 2014-15. Twenty five genotypes of Amaranthus were evaluated. High magnitude of phenotypic GCV and PCV was observed for seed yield plot-1 , followed by test weight, petiole length, number of leaves plant-1 , stem girth, leaf breadth, leaf length, number of branches plant-1 and leaf yield.

Forty four germplasm accessions of amaranth spp were evaluated during rabi-2016 for assessing the genetic variability present in the material for grain yield and yield related traits. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters studied.

With the objective to find the association of different seed characters with fruit yield in cucumber, an experiment was conducted with 30 indigenous genotypes, collected from five different states, at the Experimental Farm of the Department of Vegetable Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan during Kharif, 2015. Results revealed that yield per plant had positive and significant association with all the seed characters under study viz., seed length, seed breadth, hundred seed weight, germination percentage, seed vigour index-I and seed vigour index-II.

The present study was under taken with the view to analyse the physical, nutritional and in-vitro digestibility of raw rice varieties. The results of the study revealed that HB-2 and HKR-48 rice variety had maximum length, breadth, thickness, L/B ratio, seed weight, seed volume, water absorption capacity, bulk density and true density than other varieties and porosity was significantly higher in Permal local variety than other varieties. Moisture, crude protein, crude fat, ash and crude fibre ranged from 9.54 to 10.40, 6.19 to 8.20, 1.70 to 2.62, 0.40 to 1.17 and 0.24 to 0.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the nutritional quality and value addition of Black gram grown in H.P. Three cultivars/varieties of Black gram viz. UG-218, HIM MASH and Local cultivar were taken for the study. The various biochemical parameters studied were physico-chemical characteristics, proximate compositional, nutritional quality, functional properties and anti-nutritional constituents. The results of the investigation showed that UG-218 had maximum length, breadth and 1000 seed weight as compared to HIM MASH and Local cultivar.

Variability studies provide information on the extent of improvement possible in different characters, but they do not throw light on the extent and nature of relationship existing between yield and various contributory characters. Character association or correlation is a measure of the degree of association between two characters. A knowledge regarding the association of various characters among themselves and with economic characters is necessary for making indirect selection for improvement of economic characters.

Physical and chemical studies of some short grain and medium slender aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.)
The laboratory experiments were conducted in university lab entitled “Physical and chemical studies of some Short grain and Medium slender aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.)” on the basis of the results obtained from the present study under the investigation of head rice recovery, grain length, grain breadth, length breadth ratio, alkali spreading value and amylose content are concluded as the head rice recovery ranged from 51.86-64.70 per cent. Data exhibited that maximum head rice recovery per cent was obtained 64.70% in R-3719 followed by R-3715, i.e., 63.79 per cent and minimum 51.

Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum L var. grossum) popularly known as sweet pepper, capsicum or Shimla Mirch is a high value vegetable and an important cash crop for temperate regions. The correlation between different quantitative characters provides an idea of association that could be effectively exploited to formulate selection strategies for improving yield components.
