Ebook "Dormancy and resistance in harsh environments" studies on organisms, ranging from aquatic cyanobacteria that produce akinetes to hibernating mammals, are presented, and reveal common but also divergent physiological and molecular pathways for surviving in a dormant form or for tolerating harsh environments.

Seed dormancy is an adaptive trait employed by flowering plants to avoid harsh environmental conditions for the continuity of their next generations. In cereal crops, moderate seed dormancy could help prevent pre-harvest sprouting and improve grain yield and quality.

Unlike animals, plants can pause their life cycle as dormant seeds. In both plants and animals, DNA methylation is involved in the regulation of gene expression and genome integrity. In animals, reprogramming erases and re-establishes DNA methylation during development.

Seed germination involves progression from complete metabolic dormancy to a highly active, growing seedling. Many factors regulate germination and these interact extensively, forming a complex network of inputs that control the seed-to-seedling transition.

: The main goal of this work was to relate the germinative ecology and genetic variability of Chaerolhyllum aureum L., an Apiaceae plant with dormant, underdeveloped embryos at the time of seed dispersal. We compared the seed germination physiology traits between a relictic geographically isolated Mediterranean population (Iberian System; central Spain) and a population located in the main, colder Atlantic Alpine core (Pyrenees; northern Spain). We analyzed both populations’ genetic identity in parallel on the basis of ISSR–PCR analyses.

Juniperus procera Hoechst. ex Endl. is a medicinal tree in Saudi Arabia, primarily in the Enemas region, but it is locally threatened due to die-back disease and difficulties regarding seed reproduction (seed dormancy and underdeveloped embryonic anatomy, and germination rate < 40%).

Physical seed dormancy is an important trait in legume domestication. Although seed dormancy is beneficial in wild ecosystems, it is generally considered to be an undesirable trait in crops due to reduction in yield and / or quality.

Although the effect of cold stratification on seed dormancy release has been extensively studied for many species, knowledge of the role of stratifying temperature, soil moisture content and duration of stratification on seed dormancy release at the population level is limited.

The study species possess seed coat imposed dormancies that require pre-sowing seed treatments. Based on the results, the best treatments to release dormancy in both S. galpinii and V. robusta are sulphuric acid and mechanical scarification, as these yielded the highest, fastest and most uniform germination of seeds.

Strawberry is a very unique berry fruit. It is mainly cultivated in subtropical and temperate area. Strawberry is a non climacteric fruit. It is rich in vitamin c and iron. It is lawgrowing herbaceous plant which arise basal leaves. PGR play a key role in yield and size of the fruit. GA₃ has stimulate the effect on the fruit of strawberry ripening , testimonial by a reduce the activity of respiration and detain the synthesis of anthocyanin and breakdown of chlorophyll gibberellic acid influence the growth , and fruiting etc.

The seed containing an embryo, a miniature of new plant, structurally and physiologically equipped to sustain the growing seedling until it establish as new plant. Some traits are acquired during evolution for capacity to survive under unfavourable condition. One of such trait is ‘dormancy’, an intrinsic/extrinsic block to germination. The ABA and GA are involved in induction and release of dormancy and it also showed the involvement and complex interaction with other plant hormones such as ethylene, brassinosteriods and reactive oxygen species.

The most important factor for the success of plantation is readily availability of quality seeds. In favorable climatic conditions with optimum moisture and temperature most of the tree species germinate quickly and in unfavorable conditions some degree of seed dormancy occurs.

In this paper, we review the characteristics of domestication-related seed traits and heading dates in rice, including the key genes controlling these traits, the differences in allelic diversity between wild rice and cultivars, the geographic distribution of alleles, and the regulatory pathways of these traits. A comprehensive comparison shows that these genes contributed to rice domestication and its global expansion. In addition, these traits have also experienced parallel evolution by artificial selection on the homologues of key genes in other cereals.

Metastatic progression of breast cancer involves phenotypic plasticity of the carcinoma cells moving between epithelial and mesenchymal behaviors. During metastatic seeding and dormancy, even highly aggressive carcinoma cells take on an E-cadherin-positive epithelial phenotype that is absent from the emergent, lethal metastatic outgrowths.

Pinus gerardiana is commonly called ―Chilgoza Pine‖ which yields small edible seeds. The pine is a vital ecological and economic forestry species having restricted distribution in India. It’s mostly found in two districts of Himachal Pradesh. It’s been observed that the natural regeneration of the species is extremely poor or entirely lacking. This species has erratic and infrequent seed years and dormancy related problems that also reduce the regeneration process in natural habitats.

Pterocarpus santalinus (Linn.f) is an important tree species belongs to family Fabaceae which is a good source timber and has medicinal value similarly. The present studies summarize the effect of different treatments on seed germination of plant species suffer from germination. The seeds show dormancy, low germination percentage and longer time taken to germinate. The seeds given different treatments such as dewinged pod, soaking in water for 24h, 48h, 72h and Acid scarification of pods with wing were scarified with conc. H2SO4 for 6 and 8 minutes.

Seeds from yellow passion fruit Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa present dormancy imposed by the seed coat. The present study aimed to evaluate some treatments to overcome this dormancy for better germination. An experiment was conducted during 2015 to study the effect of different pre-sowing treatments on germination, vigour and growth of passion fruit. The study showed significant differences among the treatments. Maximum germination percentage (89.51%) and least mean germination time (11.67 days after sowing) was observed in seeds treated with sulphuric acid for 4 minutes.

Leucaena leucocephala is a medium-sized, multipurpose tree which is a valuable source of pulpwood, small timber, fuel wood, fodder and green manure. Poor and delayed seed germination is reported due to seed collection at improper maturity stage coupled with physical dormancy. Hence, the present study was carried out to determine the exact maturity stage for seed collection at three locations of northern India i.e. Agra (S1), Mathura (S2) and Hathrus (S3).

Passiflora is a large genus in the family Passifloraceae Juss. ex DC. Many Passiflora species are propagated by seed. However, seeds are often slow to germinate and have low germination rates due to seed dormancy factors. This study was conducted to evaluate four different pre-germination treatments on enhancing germination potential in seven Passiflora spp. Germination was monitored every 3 days for 90 days. Germination started after two weeks and then, a gradual increase was observed in germination in most species.

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) is a herbaceous perennial weed and dormancy in both buds and seeds is an important survival mechanism. Bud dormancy in leafy spurge exhibits three well-defined phases of para-, endo- and ecodormancy; however, seed dormancy for leafy spurge is classified as physiological dormancy that requires after-ripening and alternating temperature for maximal germination.
