Seed guar

The changes in physico-chemical properties of yoghurt containing cress seed mucilage (CM) compared with yoghurt containing guar gum (GG) or plain yoghurt during storage at 5±2 C for 15 days were evaluated. CM was prepared and added to standardized buffalo’s milk (3.2% fat and 15.0% TS) at rate of 0.025%, 0.05% and 0.10% but GG was added at the rate of 0.025% and 0.05% to create 5 treatments.

Cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub] popularly known as “Guar” is an important legume crop mainly grown under rain fed condition in arid and semi-regions of Rajasthan during kharif season. It is very hardy and drought tolerant crop. Its deep penetrating roots enable the plant to utilize available moisture more efficiently and thus offer better scope for rain fed cropping. It has high calorific and nutritive value and its seed contains 28-32% of gum.

The effect of growth regulator on growth and flowering of seed guar cultivars viz., HG 365 and HG 563 was analysed under Mahanandi conditions. The highest nitrate reductase activity, crude protein and gum content was recorded by HG 365 cultivar whereas the growth regulators found maximum in nitrate reductase activity and crude protein was recorded by the application of CCC at 1500 ppm which was on par with CCC 1000 ppm.

A study is conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pilicode for developing an instant curry paste with coconut kernel as base material which is in line with a traditional cuisine in Malabar region of Kerala. Spicy curry paste from desiccated coconut was prepared without any preservatives using virgin coconut oil, salt, curry leaf, guar gum, papaya starch, tapioca starch, jack fruit seed flour, onion powder and garlic powder along with an ideal blend of spices for instant, easy and fast cooking.

The seed cluster bean exhibited significant variations in the seed yield and quality due to spray of growth regulators. At 90 DAS, the highest seed yield per plant was recorded by HG 365. Among the growth regulators, maximum seed yield per plant was recorded by the application of CCC at 1500 ppm which was on par with CCC 1000 ppm. The lowest seed yield per plant was observed by the spray of MC 500 ppm preceded by MC 1000 ppm. The crude gum percentage differed significantly due to spray of growth regulators during kharif and rabi seasons. The maximum crude gum was recorded by HG 365.

The seed cluster bean exhibited significant variations in the growth and yield due to spray of growth regulators during kharif and rabi seasons at 30, 60 and 90 days after sowing (DAS). At 90 DAS, the highest plant height (kharif 63.99 cm; rabi 59.32) was recorded by HG 365. Among the growth regulators, maximum plant height (kharif 85.13 cm; rabi 78.92 cm) was recorded by the application of triacontanol at 1500 ppm which was on par with 1000 ppm (kharif 82.63 cm; rabi 76.60 cm). The earliest occurrence of 50% flowering (kharif 24.65; rabi 22.68) was observed in the var. HG 563.
