  • A study on thirty-six farmers’ seed samples collected from eight districts to analyse the health status of Garden pea were found to possess seed germination 10-15% which is below IMSCS (i.e. 75%) and carried 40.1-46% fungal count on seeds. Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Fusarium sp. and Pencillium sp. were fungi frequently associated with seeds which caused 24.4-55.6% reduction in germination and caused rotting of seed and seedling shoot and root.

  • The lower productivity of pulses in India is largely due to cultivation of pulses on marginal and sub-marginal lands as main crop or after the harvest of main cereal crop with less or no fertilizer application. Such cultivation practices not only results in lowering of soil fertility and productivity also results in grains low in mineral nutrient elements, consumption of such grains may cause serious health issue in human beings.

  • Seed health testing to detect seed mycoflora and other parameters like germination status, physical purity, moisture, seedling length and seed vigour index are very important component of management of crop diseases. The legume seeds particularly black gram seeds were screened against these parameters using blotter plate method from untreated seeds as per the International rules for seed testing in the laboratory of Seed Science and Technology and Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Bhawanipatna.

  • Seed health testing to detect seed-borne pathogens is an important step in the management of crop diseases. Laboratory experiments were carried out at College of Agriculture, Bhawanipatna during Kharif, 2018 to investigate the planting value of the seed and extent of seed-borne fungal pathogen problems from farmers saved seeds in Western undulated Zone of Odisha. A total number of six seed samples of Sesame were collected from farmers saved seeds in M. Rampur, Karlapada, Bhawanipatna, T. Rampur, Kesinga and Narla block of Kalahandi districts.

  • A coffeepot that was connected to the Internet (before it was even called the Internet) and which provided information about its status (long before there was Twitter). In 1991, researchers at Cambridge University shared a single coffeepot among several floors. The researchers were frustrated by the fact that they would often climb several flights of stairs, only to find the coffeepot empty. They set up a videocamera that broadcast a still image to their desktops about three times per minute — enough to determine the level of coffee in the glass pot.
