  • The Hemiptera (aphids, cicadas, and true bugs) are a key insect order, with high diversity for feeding ecology and excellent experimental tractability for molecular genetics. Building upon recent sequencing of hemipteran pests such as phloem-feeding aphids and blood-feeding bed bugs, we present the genome sequence and comparative analyses centered on the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus, a seed feeder of the family Lygaeidae.

  • In the present study, cytoplasmic male sterility derived from A2 cytoplasm of pigeonpea was combined with four leaf type agronomic backgrounds by using backcrossing programme These four leaf shapes were recessive in the expression against lanceolatus leaf shape. These naked eye polymorphic (NEP) markers will be useful for maintaining purity of hybrid seeds if coupled with cytoplasmic male sterility hence present investigation was conducted.

  • Alternaria helianthi the causal agent of sunflower leaf blight was isolated from a monoconidial culture derived from blight infected sunflower leaves of MSFH-8.Alternariahelianthi was first cultured on PDA and then transferred to Potato Dextrose broth. Toxin was purified from the cultural filtrate by treatment with organic solvents. The identity of the toxin was established by estimating carbohydrate and protein content. Based on the quantity of carbohydrate and protein the toxin was identified as glycoproteinaceous in nature.

  • A laboratory experiment was carried out to evaluate 26 groundnut genotypes for salt tolerance as well as to assess physiological basis for salt tolerance. Twenty seeds of each genotype were allowed to germinate for 72 hours at 28±1oC and then transferred to plastic beakers containing neutral sand. 7 days old seedlings were then subjected to different treatments viz. Control (plants receiving Hoagland nutrient solution adjusted to pH 6.3) and Salinity treatment (plants receiving Hoagland nutrient solution plus 200 mM NaCl adjusted to pH 6.3).

  • The present investigation was carried out in Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Olericulture, KAU, Vellanikkara with four genotypes of cucumber comprising gynoecious, monoecious and two parthenocarpic genotypes for in vitro plant regeneration. Seeds were grown in the culture bottles quarterly filled with half strength MS basal medium. Cotyledonary leaf explants were then transferred to eight media compositions of half strength MS medium with varying IAA and BAP concentrations in the culture test tubes.

  • Front line demonstration is an appropriate means for demonstration as well as transfer of improved agricultural innovations to the farming community. It provides an opportunity to researchers and extension personnel for understanding the farmer’s resources and requirement to modify the technologies for easy adaptability at farmer’s fields. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ganjam-II has conducted Cluster Front Line Demonstration on greengram at farmers’ fields in the adopted village Rajanapalli during Rabi 2017.

  • Plastids originated from cyanobacteria and the majority of the ancestral genes were lost or functionally transferred to the nucleus after endosymbiosis. Comparative genomic investigations have shown that gene transfer from plastids to the nucleus is an ongoing evolutionary process but molecular evidence for recent functional gene transfers among seed plants have only been documented for the four genes accD, infA, rpl22, and rpl32.

  • The Maternally expressed gene (Meg) family is a locally-duplicated gene family of maize which encodes cysteine-rich proteins (CRPs). The founding member of the family, Meg1, is required for normal development of the basal endosperm transfer cell layer (BETL) and is involved in the allocation of maternal nutrients to growing seeds.

  • Transfer cells are characterized by intricate ingrowth walls, comprising an uniform wall upon which wall ingrowths are deposited. The ingrowth wall forms a scaffold to support an amplified plasma membrane surface area enriched in membrane transporters that collectively confers transfer cells with an enhanced capacity for membrane transport at bottlenecks for apo-/symplasmic exchange of nutrients.

  • In water lily (Nymphaea) hybrid breeding, breeders often encounter non-viable seeds, which make it difficult to transfer desired or targeted genes of different Nymphaea germplasm. We found that pre-fertilization barriers were the main factor in the failure of the hybridization of Nymphaea.

The samples were digested with 0.1 per cent (W/V) collagenase type I and transferred to a beaker with magnetic stirrer at 600 rpm at 37oC for 30 minutes. The lesser time was given for enzymatic digestion as compared to other species. The viability of the cell was evaluated by trypan blue exclusion method using haematocytometer. Trypan blue had a high affinity to nuclear DNA, which traverse the membrane in a dead cell and dye it blue.

  • Pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma. Mimicry in plants is where a plant organism evolves to resemble another organism physically or chemically, increasing the mimic's Darwinian fitness. Mimicry in plants has been studied far less than mimicry in animals, with fewer documented cases and peer-reviewed studies. It may provide protection against herbivory, or may deceptively encourage mutualists, like pollinators, to provide a service without offering a reward in return.

  • Papaya is one of the few important fruits which flowers and yield throughout the year. Though a polygamous species with three basic types viz., staminate, pistillate and bisexual, its cultivation with seed propagation is hindered by problems due to vide variability in sex expression and fruit characters. In such point of view, propagation through asexual method could be a better alternative. The micropropagation will substitute method of propagation by cutting or grafting would be of great boon to papaya industry. The procedure for in vitro propagation of papaya (Carica papaya) cv.
