  • Finger millet is an important nutritive crop of the semi-arid zones of the world and it is the staple food crops for millions of people in Africa and Asia. To achieve more sustainable production from finger millet based cropping systems intercropping and sequential cropping of finger millet with pulse and oil seeds proved better and recorded more system yield per unit area than sole cropping of finger millet. Among the different finger mill based cropping systems finger millet + legumes recorded more sustainable yield and less weeds, insects and diseases infestation in the crop.

  • Finger millet (Eleusine coracona), popularly known as Ragi, has high yield potential of greater than 10 t/ha under optimum irrigated conditions. Usually millet seeds have four layers namely hull, bran, germ and endosperm. Among these, endosperm is only the edible part of millet. Bran and germ are rich in oil and hence affect the storage quality of millets. So dehulling / pearling of finger millet is necessary to remove the hull, bran and germ to increase the shelf life of the pearled grain and flour.

  • The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of hydrothermal treatment on milling characteristics of finger millet (PPR 2700, Vakula). Finger millet grains were soaked in two different water temperatures of 30 °C and 70 °C with 24 and 1 hour 45 minutes soaking times respectively. Treatments were followed by steaming at 1, 1.5 and 2 kg cm-1 pressures.

  • Afield experiment was conducted at National Seed Project, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru (Karnataka) during 2017-18 to study the effect of sowing time under changing climatic condition and standardization of date of sowing in finger millet. Seven popular varieties of finger millet (short duration GPU-48; medium durationGPU-28 -GPU-67, INDAF-7 and ML-365; long duration MR-1 and MR-6) were planted in RCBD at every month.   • The analysis of genetic diversity using D2 statistics clustered 33 selected genotypes of cultivated finger millet into ten different clusters. The cluster I had 8 genotypes and cluster II and IV had 9 genotypes each. The remaining clusters had only one genotype each. The inter cluster distance was highest (D=46.61) between cluster VII (GE4568) and cluster VIII (GE1200) and between cluster VII (GE4568) and cluster II (D=42.22). The trait days to 50 per cent flowering contributed more towards the genetic divergence of 33 selected finger millet genotypes.

  • Field experiment was conducted during Kharif from 2010 to 2015 at GKVK, Bangalore to know the feasibility of cultivation of fingermillet in Melia dubia. There were six treatment combinations comprising intercrop of finger millet planted in different spacings with Melia dubia and finger millet alone as control. Results revealed that, sole finger millet recorded significantly higher grain (26.1 q ha-1 ) and straw yield (5865 kg ha-1 ), which was attributed to higher growth and yield attributes like number of productive tillers (6.17 hill-1 ) and 1000 seed weight (3.69 g).
