Seed yield of pea

A set of mutant pea lines carrying induced mutations within the major seed-expressed starch-branching enzyme gene has been characterised at the molecular, chemical and agronomic levels. Eight of the induced mutations, three of which predicted a premature stop codon, were compared with the naturally occurring starch-branching enzyme mutation within the same genetic background.

The pod yield was significantly and positively correlated with pod weight, pod girth, pericarp thickness, seed weight per pod, number of pods per plant and weight of 100 seeds. The path coefficient analysis using the phenotypic correlation coefficient among the pair of characters showed that number of pods per plant had the highest positive direct effect on yield. At last it could be concluded that PSM-3 and PSM5 are best performing varieties for this region according to green pod yield.

This is because of the high probability of having efficient segregants from better combinations than that from poor hybrids. Therefore in the present investigation analysis for heterosis was done for yield and yield components in pea.

Pigeon pea is majorly grown in north-eastern dry zone of Karnataka and it carries a unique position in every cropping system of this zone. Crop Productivity of pigeonpea is being low in the north-eastern dry zone of Karnataka and this is due to several reasons. One of the main important reason is flower drop and poor seed setting. To overcome and reduce this problem and to enhance productivity of pigeonpea, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kalburgi, has introduced a product known as Pulse Magic (consists of nutrients and Plant growth regulators) as foliar spray.

Powdery mildew and Rust are major diseases of pea of worldwide distribution. Powdery mildew and Rust is an airborne disease. Powdery mildew is a particularly damaging in late sowing or in late maturity varieties. It is caused by Erysisphe pisi. The disease can cause 20-50% yield losses, reducing total yield biomass, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, plant height and number of nodes. The disease also affects green pea quality. Pea rust is characterized by the appearance of two types of symptoms.

A field experiment was conducted during winter season of 2013-14 to study the performance of different genotypes pigeon pea with planting geometry. The genotype and planting geometry significantly influenced the growth parameter, seed yield, stalk yield, harvest index, yield attributes (viz. seed pod-1 , pod plant-1 , seed plant-1 and 100 seed weight). Among the six genotypes (Asha, Rajeevlochan, RPS- 2007-106, Laxmi, RPS2008-4 and RPS-2007-10) tested, genotype Asha (1281 kg ha-1 ) recorded significantly highest seed yield over the other genotype.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2017-18 at Instructional cum Research Farm, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishvavidhyalaya, Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Utera or paira cropping (relay cropping) is age old double cropping system under the rainfed conditions in which succeeding utera crop is directly broadcasted in the standing rice crop after the flowering stage (Sharma et al., 2004). Fieldpea are a valuable source of protein for both man and animals.

This study was undertaken in Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Balagaht (M.P.) during the period from 2014-15 to 2017-18 conducted a total 48 frontline demonstration of Chickpea crop. Cultivation practices comprised under FLD viz. use of improve variety (JG -14, JG-130), seed treatment, seed inoculation, spacing 30 cm, soil test based nutrient management, irrigation water management and integrated pest management show that percentage increase in the yield of Chick pea ranged from 22.73 % to 46.11 % over farmer’s practice.

One hundred twenty genotypes of field pea were evaluated with four check varieties to assess genetic divergence for grain yield and its contributing traits. Significant differences among all the genotypes were recorded for all the characters studied except number of primary branches per plant. All the genotypes were grouped into twelve different nonoverlapping clusters by Non-hierarchical Euclidean cluster analysis on the basis of D2 values. The genotypes of cluster I had highest mean value (20.585g) for 100 seed weight.

One hundred twenty field pea (Pisum sativum L. var. arvense) genotypes were evaluated with four check varieties viz., Ambika, Rachna, HFP 8909 and HUDP 15 to assess the genetic variability, association of different yield traits and direct & indirect effects of these traits on seed yield. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences among all the genotypes for majority of the traits except number of primary branches per plant. The genotypes showed moderate to high level of genotypic coefficient of variance (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variance (PCV).

It is resulted that the growth characters of pea indicated significant effect of sowing dates as sowing dates, D1 (1st November) had recorded maximum plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, earliest 50% flowering and harvesting and SPAD value at all the growth stages, while minimum in D4 (16th December) date of sowing. Yield attributes traits revealed significant impact of date of sowing in garden pea. Highest number of pods per plant was recorded under D1 (1st November), D2, D3 and D4.

In total of 113 genotypes including three check varieties, a wide range of variability for different characters had been observed and comparison of means of genotypes using least significant differences, indicated existence of very high degree of variability for all the characters in the germplasm collection. The following five genotypes exhibited high mean performance for seed yield/plant were IP-2K-84, EC-356166, HUDP-27, DMR-15, IPFD2-6.

Poor and inconsistent yields of the Pigeonpea cultivation across different environments grown in respective seasons reduce the economic benefits for the farmers. Besides tolerances/ resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, plant type and seed yield components of Pigeonpea are the principal determinants of the consistent yields. The contemporary research was orchestrated for the identification of QTLs for plant type and seed yield components.
