The Neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros and the green-belly stink bug Dichelops melacanthus are the most important pests today for the succession system of soy-corn in Brazil. Dichelops melacanthus attacks the emerging shoot (epicotyl) of corn plants at the seedling stage of their development, remaining and reproducing on the straw over generations. Euschistus heros, on the other hand, feeds directly on the grains and lodge under fallen leaves after the soybean harvest, due to the absence of another crop host.

The present study hypothesized that ruzigrass seed treatment and sowing density and period influence seed germination and seedling establishment and that physical and/or allelopathic effects of the leaves and petioles of soybean cultivars are a major factor for interseeding success. To test these hypotheses, the influences of seed treatment, sowing density, time, and soybean cultivar on the emergence of ruzigrass seedlings in a soybean interseeding system were evaluated with the aim of mitigating environmental effects in the establishment of forage in succession to soybean.

Research to identify and characterize stem rust resistance genes in common wheat, Triticum aestivum, has been stimulated by the emergence of Ug99-lineage races of the wheat stem rust pathogen, Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), in Eastern Africa. The Montenegrin spring wheat landrace PI 362698 was identified as a source of Pgt resistance. This accession exhibits resistance to multiple Ug99-lineage and North American Pgt races at seedling and adult-plant stages.

A study was conducted at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar for determining the ability of various seed vigour parameters to predict the field emergence of 34 varieties of wheat. Twelve seed vigour parameters were evaluated viz. test weight, standard germination, seedling length, seedling dry weight, vigour index-I, vigour index-II, accelerated ageing test, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium test, dehydrogenase activity test, field emergence index and seedling establishment.

Seed size emerged as a governing characteristic for germination parameters and seedling establishment owing to best evolutionary traits of plant which impart major contribution in genetic diversity. Talc based bioformulations namely Biofor PF-2, Bioveer, Biomonas and Biozin PTB were evaluated against damping off disease of tomato. Application of these bioformulations as seed treatment and in nursery bed treatment before sowing significantly reduced the pre- and post-emergence damping off of tomato. Among all the bioformulations tested, Biozin PTB was found most effective in reducing maximum (76.68 and 70.76 per cent) reduction of pre- and post-emergence damping off of tomato.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on germination and emergence of chilli cultivars and to investigate the ability for genetic salt tolerance during germination and seedling growth. Although some of the chilli genotypes have salinity tolerance to some extent, more attention is required to assess the cultivars for salinity resistance/tolerance so as to screen them and select best types suitable to cultivate under areas prone to soil salinity.

Screening of 230 F4 segregants of cross DC 615 (Susceptible parent) × Dharwad local (Resistant parent) along with checks (Dharwad local, DC 615, DC 15, DCS 47-1 and C 152) was carried out against bruchids (Callosobruchus maculatus) at the Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Out of 230 segregants, 36 were highly resistant, 43 moderately resistant, 110 least susceptible, 34 moderately susceptible and 7 were found to be highly susceptible.

The experiment was deigned to find out the best alternative way to grow healthy tomato seedling under water stress condition. Three different protected and unprotected conditions (Polyhouse, Low tunnel and open field condition) were selected for sowing of seedling. Open field condition was taken up as a control.
