Seedling growth of maize

The mesocotyl connects the coleoptilar node and the basal part of the seminal root of maize (Zea mays) seedling. The mesocotyl pushes the shoot of the seedling out of the soil during seed germination; thus, its growth is highly related to deep-sowing tolerance.

Low temperatures decrease the capacity for biomass production and lead to growth retardation up to irreversible cellular damage in modern maize cultivars. European flint landraces are an untapped genetic resource for genes and alleles conferring cold tolerance which they acquired during their adaptation to the agroecological conditions in Europe.

The plant-microbe interaction effect of these bacteria, either singly or in combination, on growth and development of maize (Malviya Hybrid Maize 2) were also studied. The results reveal that the combination of BHU8 with RRE3 proved to be most beneficial and efficient with regards to many of the growth parameters like shoot and root length, number of leaves, shoot and root fresh weight, shoot, root dry weight and chlorophyll content.

Introduction of multipurpose trees plays an important role in agroforestry systems. It enriches the soil by providing soil cover thus providing habitat for soil flora and fauna. However, integration of trees with various crops needs to be evaluated for its allelopathic potential before its introduction into agroforestry system.

Worldwide salinity is the foremost soil environmental factor adversely affecting the seed germination, plant growth and yield. Recent studies shows that Lipo Chito Oligosaccharide (LCO-nod factors) as a unique molecule, which is responsible for abiotic stress tolerance. Hence a laboratory experiment was taken up with a sole objective of seed priming with LCO (4 ml/kg) on maize seedling growth which are exposed to different levels of salinity (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 dS m-1 ) was laid out in a factorial completely randomized design with four replications.

Maize (Zea maize) is the 3rd most important cereal world in the world following wheat, rice. It is grown mainly in the semi- arid areas of the tropics and subtropics. Rice (Oryza sativa) is one of the main staples in the world and is cultivated mainly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The exogenous application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, significantly alleviated the oxidative damage of salinity in seedlings of rice enhanced the seedlings growth and increased the dry weight of maize seedlings.

Fungi that occur inside an asymptomatic plant tissue are known as fungal endophytes. Since a decade there has been high focus on artificial establishment of entomopathogenic fungi as an endophyte in various agricultural and horticultural crops for pest management. But meagre efforts are made to identify their natural occurrence. Keeping this in view, Survey has been conducted in maize at definite phenophases of crop growth i.e. Seedling stage, knee height stage and reproductive stage.

Effect of the nutrient formulations for pre-sowing seed treatment on germination and growth of maize seedlings was studied. The formulations comprised separate copper nanoparticles (NanoCu), IET1- based on a Novalon Seed Treatment product, IET2 - based on humate metal-organic-coordination complexes (MOC), Nualgi – based on nano silica, wherein microelements were adsorbed on the surface of the silica nanoparticles, and formulations with microelements in a form of Metal-EDTA complexes, based on commercial fertilizer products of Novalon, Wuxal and Comex companies.

The experiment was conducted in Post Graduate Laboratory, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higg in bottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Pryagraj (U.P.) during kharif season 2018, in order to standardize the best method of priming specific to Maize (var. HQPM-5). Four methods of priming viz., hydropriming, magnetopriming, halopriming, and organic priming with control (Unprimed) were evaluated by screening different duration (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes and 12 hours) and different concentrations (50 mt, 100 mt, 2% and 5%) viz.

Maize is highly productive crop if it is grown under optimal environmental and management conditions. Waterlogging, caused by contingent flooding, continuous rainfall and inadequate drainage or a high water table, is one of the most important constraints for maize production in Asia and many other parts of the world.

This study was conducted at the Maize Research Institute of Vietnam using 24 maize hybrids, identified as STM1 to STM24, at five different salt concentrations, which were 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl. After seven days of germination at room temperature, seedlings were transplanted to nutrient-rich solutions salinized with salt. 17 day-old seedlings were then harvested to calculate their growth parameters of the day to seedlings fully wilt and degradation, root and shoot length, seedling dry matter production, and content.
