Selected entomopathogenic fungi

The bio efficacy of selected bio control agents viz. Metarhizium anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana, Lecanicilium lecanii and Chrysoperla zastrowii against Amrasca biguttula biguttula was studied under insectary, Department of Agricultural Entomology, TNAU, Coimbatore, India during 2014-2015. Three different concentrations viz., 1 x 104 , 1 x 106 , 1 x 108 spore/ml of these each entomopathogenic fungus were tested to evaluate the effective concentration. Among the three concentrations, 1 x 108 spores/ml of L. lecanii recorded the highest mortality of 85.

Eight isolates of entomopathogenic fungi were evaluated as dried conidia against the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica. In bioassays two isolates of Beauveria bassiana (BbGc and BbPs) and one isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae (MaPs) consistently gave high mortality to C. cephalonica larvae. Formulations in either kaolin, talc or tapioca flour (20 % w/w a.i.) thoroughly mixed with long grain rice in plastic cups (8 cm diameter by 5 cm) gave complete larval mortality by the 12th day of treatment.

Entomopathogenic fungi suppress the diverse group of insect pest such as coleopterans, lepidopterous and sucking pest. Wide spread incidence of Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus tamarii was observed during extensive and repeated survey covering different agro ecological niches of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik and Beed districts of Maharashtra (India) on insect cadavers infected with fungi. From the insect cadavers the fungal isolates were isolated on PDA media.

Current research efforts are directed towards native entomopathogenic fungi which are highly virulent to insect pests to develop efficient and eco-friendly bio-pesticides. From the insect cadavers fifteen different fungal isolates were isolated on DOC2-50% selective media and were identifying as isolates of Aspergillus tamari, A. niger and A. flavus. All the fifteen isolates showed variation in all the morphological characters studied. Highest mean colony diameter (mm) was reported in isolate EPF-14 at all the time intervals.
