The use of natural-origin active compounds in disease treatment is currently a prevailing trend. Mangiferin, a major component found in mangoes, is present in relatively high proportions. However, mangiferin's disadvantages include low solubility and poor permeability. There are numerous methods available to improve solubility and permeability, among which selfassembly is noteworthy.

Vibrio choleraehemolysin (HlyA), a water-soluble protein with a native monomeric relative molecular mass of 65 000, forms transmembrane pentameric channels in target bio-membranes.TheHlyAbinds to lipid vesicles nonspecifically and without saturation; however, self-assembly is triggered specifically by cholesterol.Here we show that the HlyA partitioned quantitatively to amphiphilic media irrespective of their compositions, indicating that the toxin had an amphiphilic surface.

Protein oligomeric complexes have emerged as a major target of current research because of their key role in aggregation processes in living systems andin vitro. Hydrophobic and charged surfaces may favour the self-assembly process by recruiting proteins and modifying their interactions. We found that equine lysozyme assembles into multimeric complexes with oleic acid (ELOA) at the solid–liquid interface within an ion-exchange chromatography column preconditioned with oleic acid.

Natural polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) self-assemble in a simulated physiological environment (50 mmsodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.2), generating in vitro nuclear aggregates of polyamines (ivNAPs). These supramolecular compounds are similar in structure and molecular mass to naturally occurring cellular nuclear aggregates of polyamines, and they share the ability of NAPs to interact with and protect the genomic DNA against nuclease degradation.
