am delighted to see a book on multimedia semantics covering metadata, analysis, and interaction edited by three very active researchers in the field: Troncy, Huet, and Schenk. This is one of those projects that are very difficult to complete because the field is advancing rapidly in many different dimensions. At any time, you feel that many important emerging areas may not be covered well unless you see the next important conference in the field. A state of the art book remains a moving, often elusive, target. But this is only a part of the dilemma.

We develop a new Web ontology rule language, called WORL, which combines a variant of OWL 2 RL with eDatalog¬. We allow additional features like negation, the minimal number restriction and unary external checkable predicates to occur at the left-hand side of concept inclusion axioms. Some restrictions are adopted to guarantee a translation into eDatalog¬.

Adaptive Information Extraction systems (IES) are currently used by some Semantic Web (SW) annotation tools as support to annotation (Handschuh et al., 2002; Vargas-Vera et al., 2002). They are generally based on fully supervised methodologies requiring fairly intense domain-specific annotation. Unfortunately, selecting representative examples may be difficult and annotations can be incorrect and require time. In this paper we present a methodology that drastically reduce (or even remove) the amount of manual annotation required when annotating consistent sets of pages. ...

A regular user of a semantic search system frequently posses no knowledge about the SPARQL language nor about the ontology of a given knowledge base, especially when it provides domain-unspecific data obtained from heterogeneous sources. Nevertheless, he/she should be provided with tools enabling both intuitive and effective exploration of RDF-compliant knowledge bases.

The objective of W3C is to transform the current Web into a Semantic Web to reuse the previous system. Many previous systems were built based on the ER model, so the upgradation and transformation of the ER model into ontology in order to reduce cost is really necessary.

Enormous amount of available data in relational database (RDB) format creates a demand for automatic transforming them into Web Ontology Language (OWL) ontology to reuse in the Semantic Web. Many approaches have been proposed, however, most of them simply generate output ontology as the same flat structure with the original database and result in redundancy of ontology data.

Web 3.0 or Semantic Web is known as web evolution in which web content can be expressed in natural language and in an easy form that can be understood, interpreted and used by software agents in finding, sharing and integrating information more easily and conveniently as never before. John Markoff, a journalist from the New York Times first coined this term in 2006 which later came in practice. As an effective web development and a sequel to web 2.0, web 3.0 is a third generation Internet based service that gives you an added advantage of the internet technology....

News flash: the web is kind of a Big Deal. It is difficult to consider its full impact on technology, society, commerce, education, governance, and entertainment without resorting to grand language that has been stated many times before. It is a Big Deal and we will never be the same because of it. But, here’s the thing. If we sat down and tried to rebuild the web today, knowing what we know from 20 years of experience with it, we would probably fail. The problem is that as software developers, we generally think in terms of software constructs: objects, services, methods, etc.

This is a system demo for a set of tools for translating texts between multiple languages in real time with high quality. The translation works on restricted languages, and is based on semantic interlinguas. The underlying model is GF (Grammatical Framework), which is an open-source toolkit for multilingual grammar implementations. The demo will cover up to 20 parallel languages. Two related sets of tools are presented: grammarian’s tools helping to build translators for new domains and languages, and translator’s tools helping to translate documents. ...

An important and well-studied problem is the production of semantic lexicons from a large corpus. In this paper, we present a system named ASIA (Automatic Set Instance Acquirer), which takes in the name of a semantic class as input (e.g., “car makers”) and automatically outputs its instances (e.g., “ford”, “nissan”, “toyota”). ASIA is based on recent advances in webbased set expansion - the problem of finding all instances of a set given a small number of “seed” instances. This approach effectively exploits web resources and can be easily adapted to different languages. ...

This paper presents a novel type of intelligent agent with a multilingual natural language interface, which retrieves information from within a Web site. This agent, named JaBot after the fact that it is a bot which has been programmed in Java, has been designed and developed by the authors in an attempt to solve common Web site problems related to information retrieval. JaBot runs quickly and efficiently, and rather than running directly on the Web site pages, it is connected to a lexical semantic map. This map is based upon the contents of the Web site in question together...

Named Entity Extraction is a mature task in the NLP field that has yielded numerous services gaining popularity in the Semantic Web community for extracting knowledge from web documents. These services are generally organized as pipelines, using dedicated APIs and different taxonomy for extracting, classifying and disambiguating named entities. Integrating one of these services in a particular application requires to implement an appropriate driver. Furthermore, the results of these services are not comparable due to different formats.

Data-driven approaches in computational semantics are not common because there are only few semantically annotated resources available. We are building a large corpus of public-domain English texts and annotate them semi-automatically with syntactic structures (derivations in Combinatory Categorial Grammar) and semantic representations (Discourse Representation Structures), including events, thematic roles, named entities, anaphora, scope, and rhetorical structure. We have created a wiki-like Web-based platform on which a crowd of expert annotators (i.e.

We demonstrate an information credibility analysis system called WISDOM. The purpose of WISDOM is to evaluate the credibility of information available on the Web from multiple viewpoints. WISDOM considers the following to be the source of information credibility: information contents, information senders, and information appearances. We aim at analyzing and organizing these measures on the basis of semantics-oriented natural language processing (NLP) techniques.

This paper presents an approach for the automatic acquisition of qualia structures for nouns from the Web and thus opens the possibility to explore the impact of qualia structures for natural language processing at a larger scale. The approach builds on earlier work based on the idea of matching specific lexico-syntactic patterns conveying a certain semantic relation on the World Wide Web using standard search engines. In our approach, the qualia elements are actually ranked for each qualia role with respect to some measure. ...

This paper discusses the challenges and proposes a solution to performing information retrieval on the Web using Chinese natural language speech query. The main contribution of this research is in devising a divide-and-conquer strategy to alleviate the speech recognition errors. It uses the query model to facilitate the extraction of main core semantic string (CSS) from the Chinese natural language speech query.
