To our knowledge, it is the first time that field measurement and high resolution simulation are carried out simultaneously to study the feasibility of using LES for meandering river at field scale. Our results show that the mixing of two upstream branches is dominated by large-scale coherent structures in the confluence region, which promote lateral transfer of momentum.
