The prediction of the expected long-term performance of concrete exposed to sewage and similar materials can be difficult as it is affected by a large number of parameters. In addition, the deterioration process in concrete is generally slow. The focus of the study was to ascertain the life expectancy of concrete septic tanks located in rural Victoria. In developing the accelerated test method, ASTM C 192, ASTM C 452, ASTM C 1293 and ASTM C 109 standard procedures were adopted wherever possible.

The study had been conducted in 2017 - 2018 to generate usage conditions of septic tanks in Ha Noi and Hai Phong through: (1) collecting information on usage condition of septic tanks by interview survey; and (2) obtaining analytical results of wastewater inflowing to and out flowing from the septic tanks selected by interview survey results.

Woven Fiber Microfiltration (WFMF) introduced in the third chamber of a septic tank as a submerged membrane for domestic wastewater treatment. Concentrations of black water stored in the third chamber were 125±15 mg/L COD, 124±28 mg/L SS and 59±9 mg/L TKN. Results showed that COD removal was 54-78% of which effluent achieved less than 50 mg/L.
