Sericulture activities

The present investigation was carried out in Sivasagar district of Assam by interviewing 120 farm women selected randomly from 6 villages with an objective to assess profile characteristics and extent of participation of farm women in sericulture. Appropriate statistical was used for analysis and interpretation of data. The study revealed that middle aged farm women were associated with sericulture activities and sericulture contributed around 14% total annual family income.

Sericulture is an agro-based, labour intensive, export oriented commercial activity. Sericulture which was considered as a subsidiary occupation in the past is now being considered as major activity and farmers are willing to take-up large-scale sericulture. To, improve mulberry area and cocoon production, The Government of Karnataka and department of sericulture started a new demand driven extension approach called Technical Service Centres (TSCs) at the grass-root level (Hobli and Taluka level).

Sericulture as an industrial sector has been a component of the backbone of Jammu &Kashmir state‟s economy, carrying itself, a rich history. The prevailing climate and availability of skilled labour in the valley of Kashmir are the favourable factors existing for silk production. There are 2,800 villages and 33,000 households which have taken up sericulture as an important economic activity.

Women play a significant and crucial role not only in agriculture but also in agricultural allied activities. Over the years, there is a gradual realization of the key role of women in agriculture development and their vital contribution in the field of agriculture, food security, horticulture, livestock management, processing, nutrition, sericulture, fisheries, and other allied sectors. As cultivators, agricultural labourers, artisans and house wives they constitute sizable section of work force.

The present study on ―Low back pain assessment of Farm women involved in Sericulture‖ was done to assess the musculoskeletal discomforts faced by farm women who are actively involved in Sericulture industry. Low back pain is a universal experience that every human has at some point. It is a symptom of a pain that can be found between the twelfth rib and the inferior gluteal folds of the body. Sericulture is an important industry in the rural areas of Meghalaya where rural women are involved. The study was done in two villages of Samanda Block in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.

Sericulture is a traditional agro-based economic activity that has been playing a significant role in generating employment and income. Ericulture is a subsidiary occupation of the rural women folk of Indo-Mongoloid and Tibeto-Burman races of the Brahmaputra Valley. In the present study three Sericulture progressive villages were surveyed in the district from each of the four sub-division of Kokrajhar district namely Kokrajhar, Dotma, Gossaigaon and Parbatjora respectively.

In India 82 per cent of farmers are small and marginal farmers whose acreage is less than 2 ha. These farmers play a pivotal role in Indian economy. Majority of these farmers practicing mono crop cultivation. Discouraging results of monoculturing (non-integrated system) on crop productivity, led to the development of integrated farming system (IFS) strategy which enables adequate income, employment, nutritional security and eco friendly. IFS has many advantages over the monoculturing.
