  • Ebook "Introduction to plant pathology" introduces the eleven types of organism that cause plant disease, ranging from higher plants to viroids and describes examples of cash and staple crop diseases that have caused human catastrophes. Early chapters cover serological and molecular techniques for the diagnosis of plant pathogens, epidemiology, methods for estimating disease severity and its effect on crop yields and techniques for limiting inoculum.

  • The present study was carried out to find out data on Dengue specific serological markers like NS1 antigen, IgM antibody and epidemiological scenario of Dengue cases in Kutch region during the year 2014. Total 765 blood samples from across the Kutch region were tested by ELISA for NS1 antigen and/or IgM antibody as per the protocols and personal, demographic and clinical details of each patient was recorded.

  • Currently, dengue virus infection has become one of the major public health problem in India. The dengue virus infection which was primarily urban centric is now encroaching to rural parts of India. A three year trend study of dengue virus infection was carried out from January 2015 to December 2017 in the rural part of Kerala. Serological markers for dengue virus infection like NS1 (non-structural protein) antigen, Ig M, Ig G along with sociodemographic variables were analyzed. The overall year wise prevalence of dengue (at least one test positive) infection was 31.5%, 18.1% and 36.

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most important agent causing transfusion transmitted infections in multitranfused patients. HBV-DNA is a concern for transmission from transfusion or transplantation in serologically negative blood for HBV i.e., occult hepatitis B (OHB). The aim of this study is to find out the prevalence of HBV infection in multitransfusd patients including OHB infections. The present study was conducted in 200 multitransfused patients attending the haematology/thalassemia OPD. Blood sample were collected and tested for HBsAg, Anti HBs, Anti HBc and HBV DNA by DNA PCR.

  • The term viral hepatitis refers to primary infection of liver by any one of the heterogeneous group of hepatitis virus which currently consists of types A, B, C, D, E and G Hepatitis virus infection occurs as an acute illness. HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) is the most common marker of infection, which is present in high concentrations in early acute infections and is continued to be produced in chronic disease. The present study is undertaken because there is paucity of data indicating prevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C among pre-operative patients admitted in our hospital.

  • When the groundwork for the fi fth edition of Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry began in early 2007, it became clear that we had reached a fork in the road. It has always been my intention that each successive edition of this work should refl ect the state of the art of clinical periodontology and, in doing such, should run the gamut of topics within this subject area.

  • Forensic dentistry, like all the forensic sciences, has come a long way since the publication of the last textbook on forensic dentistry. The editors would like to thank the many students and other interested individuals who, over the years, have asked questions that have stimulated some of the answers found in this text. We appreciate the opportunity to share this material and have assembled, we think, an outstanding list of contributors to this topic of forensic dentistry.

  • Anti–cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) using a peptide of filaggrin has been used extensively as a new serologic marker of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (1,2). Many studies have confirmed that anti-CCP enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is as sensitive as rheumatoid factor (RF) and much more specific for RA among various rheumatic diseases (2). However, anti- CCP in other diseases has been less well studied.

  • Small samples and study area covering only 2 DOTS centers are some of the study limitations. Other limitations include exclusion of testing for latent TB infection (LTBI). This was as a result of shortcomings associated with use of the only available diagnostic tool- Tuberculin (Mantoux) skin test (TST). These include invasive nature of the test, the need for the patient to come back for follow up TST reading, cross-reactivity with environmental mycobacteria and previous BCG vaccination.

  • In Lyme Borreliosis, western blot is the preferred serologic test. Antigen detection tests (antigen capture and PCR), although insensitive, are very specific and are especially helpful in evaluating the seronegative patient and those still ill or relapsing after therapy. Often, these antigen detection tests are the only positive markers of Bb infection, as seronegativity has been reported to occur in as many as 30% to 50% of cases. Nevertheless, active LB can be present even if all of these tests are non-reactive! Clinical diagnosis is therefore required.

  • Forty years ago, just prior to the discovery of the hepatitis B surface antigen, the concept that chronic liver disease could be a sequel to infection by any agent of acute viral hepatitis was controversial and hotly debated. With the development of specific and sensitive serologic and virologic markers of infection by the bloodborne and enterically transmitted hepatitis viruses, the linkage of the former agents with chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma was established beyond doubt....
