  • Sesame (Sesamum indicum) can accumulate over 60% oil in its seed. However, low oil content genotypes with an oil content of less than 50% are also observed. To gain insights into how genes shape this variation, we examined 22 seed and carpel transcriptomes from 3 varieties of sesame with high and low oil content.

  • The sesame germplasm consisting of thirty three accessions were assessed for the extent of variability, degree and direction of character association among yield and its contributing traits and the direct and indirect effects of various components on yield. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among the genotypes for almost all the characters studied. High and moderate phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation (PCV and GCV) were noticed for most of the yield contributing characters.

  • Genetic diversity among 28 sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) varieties was examined at DNA level by means of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Fifteen primers used produced a total of 132 RAPD fragments. Each primer generated 3 to 26 amplified fragments with an average of 8.8 bands per primer. Based on pair-wise comparisons of RAPD amplification products, Nei and Li’s similarity coefficients were computed to assess the associations among the varieties. Pair-wise similarity indices varied from 0.35 to 0.84.

  • Twenty one genotypes including check Krishna were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications during kharif-2017 at research farm of TCA, Dholi for estimation of genetic variability among them. Genotypes varied significantly for all the morpho-physiological characters indicating the presence of considerable variability among the genotypes. Significant bidirectional shift was observed in the mean values as compared to better check, thus provided scope for selection.

  • Phyllody is a serious disease of sesame caused by phytoplasma. Different types of disease symptoms are reported to be associated with sesame phyllody. The major symptoms are phyllody, Flower virescence, witches broom, shoot tip fasciation, flattening of the shoot apex and cracking of seed capsules. In addition to this, infected plants exhibit reduction of internode distance and of leaf size. Investigations were carried out on the symptomatology of phytoplasma associated with phyllody disease.

  • Correlation and path coefficient analysis were carried out for yield and yield attributing traits in 60 genotypes of sesame during 2018. The genotypic correlation coefficients were found to be of relatively higher magnitude than phenotypic correlation coefficient, indicating strong inherent correlation between traits. The seed yield/plant exhibited positive and significant correlation with days to flower initiation, days to 50% flowering, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant and number of capsules per plant both at genotypic and phenotypic levels.
