Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is a diploid C4 panicoid species. Because of its prominent drought resistance, small genome size, self-pollination, and short life cycle, foxtail millet has become an ideal model system for studying drought tolerance of crops. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, small RNAs that play important regulatory roles in the development and stress response in plants.

Downy mildew, caused by the oomycete pathogen Sclerospora graminicola, is an economically important disease of Gramineae crops including foxtail millet (Setaria italica). Plants infected with S. graminicola are generally stunted and often undergo a transformation of flower organs into leaves (phyllody or witches’ broom), resulting in serious yield loss. To establish the molecular basis of downy mildew disease in foxtail millet, we carried out whole-genome sequencing and an RNA-seq analysis of S. graminicola.

The present study was carried out with one hundred genotypes of foxtail millet procured from ICRISAT mini core collection (Upadhyaya et al., 2011) for Lysine content. The range of values for these parameters ranged from 0.49-2.45 respectively, ISe 1610 (0.49g/100g of protein) recorded least amount of Lysine whereas ISe 1187 recorded highest amount of Lysine (2.45g/100g of protein). The study also reveals great variability existing among the collection of Italian millet accessions for Lysine that can be exploited to improve the cultivars to meet the nutritional requirements of humans.

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif, 2017 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jagtial with three varieties (SiA 3156, SiA 3085 and Suryanandi) in combination with four dates of sowing (10th, 20th 30th August and 10th September). Field experiment was conducted in 50 Chinese millet genetic resources to assess the genetic divergence for 12 metric traits through Principal Component Analysis.
