Several soil fungi

Brinjal is one of the important vegetable crop cultivated widely in India. It is susceptible to many diseases like sclerotium rot/wilt, verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt and bacterial wilt and it is being attacked by several diseases of fungi and bacteria. The collar rot/wilt disease caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is an important constraint in brinjal production. Hence, an in vivo study was conducted to evaluate the bio efficacy of antagonistic bioagents and fungicide chemicals against root rot/wilt disease of Brinjal at College of Agriculture, Bheemrayangudi during 2011–2012.

Trichoderma fungi live in the soil rhizosphere and are beneficial for plant growth and pathogen resistance. Several species and strains are currently used worldwide in co-cultivation with crops as a biocontrol alternative to chemical pesticides even though little is known about the exact mechanisms of the beneficial interaction.

Endophytes are microorganisms mostly bacteria and fungi that lives partially or completely its life cycle inside living plant tissue without causing adverse negative symptoms. Endophytes play a major role in structuring shaping processes of plant such as colonization, competition, coexistence and soil nutrient dynamics. Some endophytes promote growth of their host plants by enhancing the host‟s ability to take up nitrogen and phosphorus.

Microorganisms play important roles in the recycling of agricultural wastes. Composting is the degradation of organic materials through the activities of diverse microorganisms. The compost generated by bioconversion of agro-residues offers several benefits such as enhanced soil fertility and soil health which can lead to increased agricultural productivity, improved soil biodiversity, reduced ecological risks and a healthier environment. This investigation examined the microbial community dynamics, loads and identification of microbiota at various stages of composting process.

Phosphorus and zinc are two essential nutrients which are required for normal plant growth. These nutrients are mutually antagonistic in certain circumstances which can cause yield reductions in many crops due to either P or Zn deficiencies. Deficiencies typically happen when a nutrient is available in small amounts. In this phenomenon, the nutrient is present in marginal to normal levels but the antagonizing nutrient is available in such a large amount that it induces the deficiency of the other.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most ancient oil seed crop cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Irrespective of the agro-climate conditions, sesame is liable to be infected by various pathogenic fungi. Among the fungal diseases, stem and root rot of sesame caused by Macrophomina phaseolina affects severely at all stages of crop growth. Macrophomina phaseolina is a diverse, omnipresent soil borne pathogen. The pathogen survives as sclerotia in the soil and in host tissue for varying periods.

An edible ectomycorrhizal fungus Phlebopus spongiosus have been found in pomelo orchards (Citrus maxima). The culture broth of Ph. spongiosus became darker after ca. 3 weeks of inoculation. The dry production of culture broth extract (culture extract) was 0.30 ± 0.09 g per culture (20 ml broth in a 50 ml flask).

This lab will introduce students to a simple bioassay that will allow them to explore the effects that a chemical's concentration has on the level of toxicity. By relying on morphological examination of sponges hatching from gemmules that are smaller than a millimeter in diameter, this module will help students develop their microscopy skills. Our major aim, however, is to have students strengthen their ability to design and test their own hypotheses.
