Shelf life of sapota fruits
-
The sapota fruit is very perishable cannot store longer than 5 days to rapid metabolic activities. Sapota fruit was reported massive post harvest losses and need mandatory to increase the shelf life of Sapota 20-30 days accordingly, there's a essential to control its ripening ..

The present investigation was carried out with five different packaging material T1 (LDPE), T2 (HDPE), T3 (Shrink), T4 and T5 (Cling) for increasing the shelf life of sapota at different temperature and ambient temperature. The effect of packaging material on physiological loss in weight, decay loss, pulp: peel ratio, fruit length, fruit width, and fruit shape index, specific gravity was observed.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of preharvest sprays of calcium compounds and growth regulator on sapota trees at 50 % of the fruit maturity (4 months after fruit set). Various physical parameters like physiological loss in weight, number of days for ripening, firmness, ripening, shelf life, spoilage were estimated.

Sapota (Achras zapota L.) is one of the tropical climacteric fruits preferred by the consumers due to its sweet taste and aroma. Fruits become ripe very quickly after harvesting due to sudden climacteric rise with high respiration rate and ethylene production. This quick ripening causes loosening the texture of fruit leads to softening of and spoilage. The short shelf life of the fruit is a marketing problem which is a major cause of huge postharvest loss of this fruit.

Sapota (cv: Cricket Ball) harvested from farmers field, packaged in customized Corrugated Fibre Board box of size 400×300×100mm, 5ply rate, 180GSM kraft paper thickness with 20BF bursting strength withstood drop test as compared CFB boxes made from other combinations. These CFB boxes had less cobb value (12.42g/m2 ) and puncture resistance (82.86N/m2 ) compared to other boxes. The sapota fruits packaged and stored in these boxes had a shelf life of 16 days at low temperature storage (18°C, 80% RH) and 6 days at ambient storage condition (28-30°C, 55% RH).

A study on evaluation of 22 and 17 years old sapota cultivars under AICRP on fruits, KRCCH, Arabhavi, Karnataka. The study revealed that among 22 and 17 years old the cvs. DHS-1 and Cricket Ball (ARSA) showed superior results with respect to growth and yield parameters like canopy volume (305.25 m3, 154.90 m3); fruit weight (139.82 g, 102.83 g); fruit yield (156.25 kg/tree, 111.67 kg/tree); fruit volume was more in DHS-1 and Cricket Ball:Udupi (77.40 ml, 84.07 ml) respectively. Among 22 and 17 years old the pulp to peel ratio was more in cvs. CO-1 and Mohangootee (14.62, 12.
