  • The cucumber is one of the most important vegetables worldwide and is used as a research model for study of phloem transport, sex determination and temperature-photoperiod physiology. The shoot apex is the most important plant tissue in which the cell fate and organ meristems have been determined. In this study, a series of whole-genome small RNA, degradome and transcriptome analyses were performed on cucumber shoot apical tissues treated with high vs. low temperature and long vs. short photoperiod.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an efficient protocol for genotype independent gene transformation in cotton (Gossypium hirusutum) a worldwide commercially important fibre crop, to reduce the adverse impact of harmful chemicals used to control biotic stress. Most cotton varieties remain recalcitrant and amenable to genetic manipulation to protocols so far developed.

  • Phyllody is a serious disease of sesame caused by phytoplasma. Different types of disease symptoms are reported to be associated with sesame phyllody. The major symptoms are phyllody, Flower virescence, witches broom, shoot tip fasciation, flattening of the shoot apex and cracking of seed capsules. In addition to this, infected plants exhibit reduction of internode distance and of leaf size. Investigations were carried out on the symptomatology of phytoplasma associated with phyllody disease.

  • Recently we showed that de novo expression of a turtle riboflavin-binding protein (RfBP) in transgenic Arabidopsis increased H2O2 concentrations inside leaf cells, enhanced the expression of floral regulatory gene FD and floral meristem identity gene AP1 at the shoot apex, and induced early flowering.

  • Capsicum annuum L. is an important vegetable crop of India and grown widely in open field as well as polyhouses. Low seed germination and higher price of seeds is major problem associate with the cultivation of this crop. To overcome these problems, plant tissue culture offers technology to generate a nursery in minimum duration with several other benefits. For this purpose, a study was designed to evaluate the effect of benzyl amino purine (BAP) on seed germination and multiplication shoot induction from shoot apex and nodal segment. Explants were obtained from in vitro grown seedlings.

  • Present investigation was carried out the effect of different photoperiod regimes on shoot bud induction, callus induction and shoot regeneration from callus culture in leaf explants of guggul. Standard protocols micropropagation protocol (1.5 mg/l BAP) for nodal segment and (2.0 mg/l Kn) for shoot apex explant and callus induction (2.0 mg/l 2,4-D) and regeneration protocol (1.5 mg/l Kn+ 1.0 mg/l 2,4-D)] were subjected to different photoperiod regimes (16:8, 14:10, 12:12 and 8:16). The cultures were incubated at 25±2°C with a light intensity of 3000 lux.

  • In this study, to evaluate the ability to accept transgenes of the two cassava cultivars KM94 and KM140, which are grown widely in Vietnam, A. tumefaciens bacterial strains C58/pGV2260, EHA105 and LBA4404 containing vector pCB-gusplus or pPIPRA558 haboring selectable marker gene gus/gusplus, were co-inoculated with explants from four selected sources, including (1) immature leaves, (2) shoot apexes, (3) callus, and (4) somatic embryo cotyledons.

  • At the time of his death, Petrie had completed early drafts of two or three chapters of a book which was to have been called 'The Developmental Physiology of Plants', and the above quotation from Plato had been placed at the beginning of Chapter 2, 'The Change in Dry Weight and Leaf Area, and First Steps in the Analysis of Growth Rate'. Unfortunately the book had not reached a stage from which it could have been completed by any of his colleagues, and we had to content ourselves with placing the quotation on the title page of a bound volume of Petrie's papers in plant physiology for the...
