This study, a range of temperatures, lighting periods and salinity levels were examined for cyst hatching. The quality nauplii from optimized cyst hatching conditions were used to determine the toxicity of 26 methanol extracts of 24 poisonous plant species collected from the mountainous regions in Quang Tri province of Vietnam.

This study aimed to quantify the phenolic contents and the antioxidant capacities of leaf extract powders from three Myrtaceae plants, namely Cleistocalyx operculatus (Vietnamese name: Vối), Psidium guajava (Ổi), and Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Sim), investigate their inhibitive activities on the growth of bacteria isolated from spoiled shrimps, and evaluate their values as preservative agents in the cold storage of Pacific whiteleg shrimps (Penaeus vannamei).

We have carried out studying for antioxidant activity of 58 extracts prepared from vegetables and fruits in Viet Nam by three methods including DPPH and H2O2 scavenging activity assays and determination of total flavonoid content (TFC). Ethanol extract of Tamarind seed (NTBT-17), Grape seed (NTBT-19) and Mangosteen peel (TNB-10) showed high amount of TFC which is 848.8, 655.9 and 422.9 mgQE/100g, respectively.

Tyrosinase plays an important role in the formation of melanin. Thus, the process of melanin formation can be reduced through the inhibition of tyrosinase. The objective of this study is to investigate the tyrosinase inhibitory activity of different red seaweeds harvested in the coast of Khanh Hoa Province.

In this study, factors affecting the extraction yield of carotenoids from dried shrimp waste by organic solvents have been studied. The results showed that the solvent ratio hexane: acetone = 3: 1 gave the highest carotenoid yield. At this ratio of solvent’s mixture, the carotenoid yield reached highest at temperature 60 C after 2 hours extraction, which was 44.64 µg/g raw shrimp waste (d.b.) (ratio of solvent to raw material 3/1). Ultrasound or vortexing gave higher extraction yield than in static conditions, which was 1.8- fold to 1.5- fold increase, respectively.

Changes in melanosis, microbiology, and fat oxidation in Pacific white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) when treated with Houttuynia cordata extract (designated E-DC) were monitored during cold storage for seven days at 20 C. Whole shrimps treated with E-DC solution (0.025%, w/v) revealed slow growth of total aerobic microorganisms, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, throughout cold storage in comparison to the control sample treated by water (p0.05).

Early mortality syndrome (EMS) or acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is an emerging disease reported recently that has caused massive loss to saline shrimp aquaculture. EMS/AHPND was recognized in Vietnam since 2011 and up to now its adverse effect is still serious to shrimp industry nationwide. Determination of the main pathogenic factor and the role of other microbial candidates is a very important study.

Carotenoprotein was extracted by a hydrolysis method using both inorganic and organic acids. Shrimp heads were firstly hydrolyzed by adding a 0.2% (w/v) hydrochloric acid solution at room temperature for an hour following by hydrolyzing with a 0.4% (v/w) formic acid solution for another 2 h at the same temperature. The obtained carotenoprotein consisted of high contents of protein (57.8 wt.%) and carotenoids (473.9 ppm). This method is facile and efficient for the extraction of carotenoprotein from other shrimp and crab wastes on a large scale.
