The new InfraRed PhotoLuminescence (IRPL) signal in feldspar offers a promising alternative to the wellestablished OSL method to recover the absorbed radiation dose for dating purposes. The non-destructive readout using Stokes shifted photoluminescence offers the opportunity to carry out repeat measurements to improve the signal to noise ratio, and the steady state signal enables straightforward spatially and spectrally resolved measurements.

This thesis presents the following contributions. First, it is identified that disturbance estimation based networks utilised for compensation possess the same polynomial architectures as signal conditioning anti-windup and their equivalents. Next, an appropriate strategy is identified to integrate disturbance compensation for finite-controlset optimisation schemes via the constraint set rather than the cost function to maintain a simple and elegant problem structure.

Over the last decade sensitivity analysis techniques have been shown to be very useful to analyse complex and high dimensional Systems Biology models. However, many of the currently available toolboxes have either used parameter sampling, been focused on a restricted set of model observables of interest, studied optimisation of a objective function, or have not dealt with multiple simultaneous model parameter changes where the changes can be permanent or temporary.

We normally think of the eye as an organ for vision, but due to the discovery of additional nerve connections from recently-detected novel photoreceptor cells in the eye to the brain, it is now understood how light also mediates and controls a large number of biochemical processes in the human body. The most important findings are related to the control of the biological clock and to the regulation of some important hormones through regular light-dark rhythms. This in turn means that lighting has a large influence on health, well-being and alertness.

Introduction To Equalizers In most digital data transmission systems the dispersive linear channel encountered exhibits amplitude and phase distortion. As a result, the received signal is contaminatedby Intersymbo1 Interference (ISI). In a system, which transmits a sequenceof pulse-shaped information symbols, the time domain full response signalling pulses are smeared hostile dispersive by the channel, resulting in intersymbol interference. At the receiver, the linearly distorted signal has to be equalized in order torecover the information.

Modern large signal modelling packages offer extremely accurate results if good models are provided. However, they are often slow when optimisation is required. It would therefore be very useful to be able to optimise the performance of a circuit, such as the load network for a power amplifier, by being able to vary the important parameter values as well as the frequency and then to observe the waveforms on an ‘oscilloscope-like’ display in real time.
