This study aimed to assess lower limb strength and some related factors among older people with dementia examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Three-quarters of older dementia patients have impaired lower limb strength. Our results highlighted that diabetes, and geriatric syndromes such as malnutrition, high fall risk, dependence, and partial dependence were significantly associated with lower limb strength in older patients with dementia.

To improve the prognosis of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), investigating predictive biomarkers of their prognosis and chemotherapeutic responsiveness is necessary. This study aimed to analyze the clinical significance of serum proteinase-3 (PRTN3) as a predictor for prognosis and chemosensitivity, especially to bevacizumab therapy, in mCRC.

The study of human B cell response to dengue virus (DENV) infection is critical to understand serotype-specific protection and the cross-reactive sub-neutralizing response. Whereas the first is beneficial and thus represents the ultimate goal of vaccination, the latter has been implicated in the development of severe disease, which occurs in a small, albeit significant, fraction of secondary DENV infections.

Acral and mucosal melanomas are aggressive subtypes of melanoma, which have a significantly lower burden of somatic mutations than cutaneous melanomas, but more frequent copy number variations, focused gene amplifications, and structural alterations. The landscapes of their genomic alterations remain to be fully characterized.

Congenital lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is a rare but significant condition affecting fetal urinary tract development. LUTO has a range of etiologies, with posterior urethral valves (PUV) being the most common cause. The prenatal diagnosis of LUTO plays a crucial role in recognizing the condition and guiding management decisions.

While an important surgical landmark of the dentate line has been established for locally advanced lower rectal cancer (LALRC), the prognostic significance of dentate line invasion (DLI) has not been well defined. This study aimed to explore the impact of DLI on prognosis in LALRC patients with anal sphincter involvement after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery.

Ebook "Taxation and development - A comparative study" examines the tax systems of some twenty countries to determine whether their tax laws are used to support growth and development across borders in lower-income and poor countries. Given the critical economic development needs of poorer countries and the importance of stability in these regions to the security of populations throughout the world, the use of a country’s tax laws to support investment in the developing world gains crucial significance.

As a component of membrane lipids and the precursor of oxysterols and steroid hormones, reprogrammed cholesterol metabolism contributes to the initiation and progression of multiple cancers. Thus, we aim to further investigate the significance of cholesterol metabolism in lower-grade gliomas (LGGs).

Acoustic feedback is a major problem in openfit digital hearing aids, which significantly lowers the signal quality and limits the achievable maximum stable gain. Adaptive feedback cancellation (AFC) is a common and efficient approach, however, it introduces a biased estimate of the feedback path due to a high correlation between loudspeaker signal and the incoming signal, especially when the incoming signal is spectrally coloured, e.g., speech, music.

A long fruit (lf) mutant was obtained from the cucumber inbred line ‘SN5’ by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-mediated mutagenesis. We found that plant height and internode length of lf were significantly decreased, while leaf area was significantly increased in comparison to wild type (WT) plants. Higher carbohydrate level, together with lower chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters, was revealed in lf leaves than those of WT.

Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) is a demethylase and plays a vital role in various cancers. However, the regulation mechanism of FTO in prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of FTO in PCa. The function and mechanism of FTO-mediated in PCa were determined by gain-of-function assays and RNA-seq. We found that FTO expression in PCa tissues and two PCa cell lines were significantly lower than that in adjacent tissues and normal cell line.

The programmed cell death 1 (PD-1)/PD-1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) signaling pathway is significantly upregulated in influenza virus infection, which impairs the antiviral response. Blocking this signaling pathway may reduce the damage, lower the virus titer in lung tissue, and alleviate the symptoms of infection to promote recovery.

This work investigated the effect of adding low concentrations of nano-SiO2 (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) in the properties of films based on sodium alginate, to identify lower thresholds in the proportion of the reinforcing agent. It was found that, even in the smallest proportion, thermal stability of the nanocomposites improved significantly (with degradation onset increased by almost 15% compared with the control film).

Tephras are significant markers in the stratigraphic record and play a key role in establishing paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate histories worldwide. Despite burgeoning research focused on tephra characterization and correlation techniques, there are still few techniques that allow for the direct dating of tephra, particularly below the lower age limit of K/Ar and Ar/Ar dating methods.

A multimodal and preventative approach to providing postoperative analgesia is becoming increasingly popular for children and adults, with the aim of reducing reliance on opioids. We conducted a prospective, randomized double-blind study to compare the analgesic efficacy of intravenous paracetamol and dipyrone in the early postoperative period in school-age children undergoing lower abdominal surgery with spinal anesthesia.
