  • Nutritional quality of maize kernel artificially infested by Sitophilus oryzae and exposed to four different CO2 concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent in modified atmosphere was studied upto six months of storage. The results revealed that exposure of kernels to 80 per cent CO2 concentration could able to maintain good per cent of carbohydrates (72.93 per cent), total proteins (8.67 per cent), crude fat (5.07 per cent) and crude fibre (2.40 per cent) upto six months of storage followed by 60 per cent CO2 concentration.

  • The efficacy of sixteen grain protectants @ 5% was compared against Sitophilus oryzae in storage. Adult weevils were exposed to the paddy, wheat and maize grains treated with the protectants. The mortality was recorded at 1, 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of exposure. Subsequently, all adults were removed and the treated grains remained at the same condition for 56 days. After this interval, the F1 adult female progeny was counted. The protectants caused equally higher insect mortality on paddy and maize grain at 1 day of application.

  • The wheat varieties HD-2733 and K-307 were found moderately resistant against Sitophilus oryzae in which higher hardness, lower moisture, lesser eggs, progeny and population with longer developmental period and lesser grain weight loss and damaged grain were recorded. Rest wheat varieties found susceptible to Sitophilus oryzae. Hardness having negative association with pest infestation. While moisture showed positive relation. The fecundity and progeny were positive relation with percent weight loss and damaged grain.
