The paper presents a numerical study on the effects of opening size and location on punching shear resistance of flat slabs without drop panels and shear reinforcement using ABAQUS. The study proposes an ABAQUS model that is enable to predict the punching shear resistance of flat slabs with openings. The model is validated well with the experimental data in literature.

This type of floor beam structure consists of built-up hollow-shallow steel beam mandatory connected with cast in situ concrete slab through the openings at both side of web along the beam. The shear connection level of composite beam is depended on not only the friction at the connected surface between hollow steel section and concrete but also the shear resistance of concrete dowels, which go through the openings

Study on the punching shear capacity of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete flat slabs with the concrete grade is not greater than B60, no shear stirrup, no slab openings, no consideration of influence of moment at column-slab connections, columns with circle or rectangular section only.

In this situation the underground structure shall be harmonized with this underground space planning. The major structural issues are stability against uplift force by groundwater and balance of lateral force by earth and water pressure. These engineering issues are studied and their solutions are proposed.

Terminal 2 was opened in 1960. Once again, the architect firm responsible was Vilhelm Lauritzen AS. Its simple layout as a large, centre-less space with inserted and replaceable floor slabs was designed to make it possible to carry out later conversions and extensions without bringing the terminal to a halt. In 1987, Vilhelm Lauritzen AS completed an extension of Terminal 2 with a large new shopping centre. The terminal has subsequently been converted and extended several times (see pages 16 and 24).

The rock mass around an underground opening is subjected to a unique stress path that results in low radial confinement and both tangential loading and unloading conditions near the wall. As a result, the rock mass strength near underground excavations is controlled by failure mechanisms dominating at low confinement. Hence, when constructing underground works in hard rock, two general scenarios are encountered: (1) structurally controlled gravity-driven failures; and (2) stress-induced failure with spalling and slabbing....

Some of the underground Rapid Transit System (RTS) stations are constructed by the “top-down” method. In this method, the underground retaining walls are first installed. In most cases, these retaining walls are concrete diaphragm walls. This is followed by excavation to just below the roof slab level of the underground structure, with the retaining walls and struts supporting the soil at the sides. The roof slab is then constructed, providing a massive support across the excavation.
