This thesis investigates the SPH capability available in the commercial Finite Element (FE) code LS-DYNA®, for water impact problems. Experiments have been conducted on rigid wedges impacting water, which were then simulated with the SPH method. Although certain limitations were experienced with the experimental results, a positive correlation was observed with the numerical technique, thus establishing SPH as a promising method for crashworthiness design.

Submarine slide is the most serious threat on both local and regional scales. Tsunami phenomenon induced by submarine slide has put us on the challenge in understanding from generation mechanism to propagation and coastal inundation and mitigating the risk from submarine slide generated tsunami.

In this article, we present a numerical Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) method. In the SPH method for the Navier – Stokes equations the most widespread method to solve for pressure and mass conservation is the weakly compressible assumption (WCSPH). This article presents two important benchmark problems to validate the algorithm of SPH method. The two benchmark problems chosen are the Lid – driven cavity problem and Poiseuille flow problem at very low Reynolds numbers. The SPH results are also in good agreement with the analytical solution.
