Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality in dogs, but diagnosis may be impaired due the insensitivity of routine renal function biomarkers to detect earlier or milder forms of injury. Snake envenomation is one of several causes of AKI in dogs and humans.

There is extensive evidence that FcR c-chain couples to the collagen receptor glycoprotein VI (GPVI) and becomes phosphorylated on tyrosines upon receptor cross-linking. However, it is not established whether this receptor complex is sufficient to initiate the signalling cascade. We transfected GPVI and the FcR c-chain into the human erythroleukaemia cell line K562, which lacks detectable expression of GPVI and the FcR c-chain. The results show that GPVI is unable to signal when expressed alone, despite its surface expression, upon stimulation with the snake C-type lectin, convulxin....

There are different glycosylated proteins in snake venoms, but no glycosylated representatives of a large family of three-fingered toxins have previously been detected. A new glycoprotein was isolated from the venom of the Thai cobra Naja kaouthia. MALDI MS of the glycoprotein contained an array of peaks in the range from 8900 to 9400 Da indicating its microheterogeneity. Carbohy-drate analysis showed the presence of mannose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, fucose and neuraminic acid.
