  • RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful molecular tool for gene discovery and functional validation for candidate vaccine antigens from the vast amount of information available within EST datasets. In this paper we report the knock down in the phenotypic expression of Hemonchus contortus astacin-like MTP gene associated with reproduction and bloodfeeding of this parasite which is predominantly expressed in late larval and adult stages by RNAi interference. The RNAi experiments were conducted utilizing the soaking protocol.

  • Green gram bacterial leaf spot pathogen X. axonopodis pv. vignaeradiatae was isolated from diseased samples collected from different locations of Udaipur district. The pathogenicity was proved on one month old green gram plants of cv. SML-668 and isolate Xav-02 (Bhatewar) was found more virulent with 4 days incubation period and require 12 days for disease development. Initially dark brown water soaked spots were found on cotyledons and then appeared on leaves and stem of seedlings. On leaves, irregular dark brown raised necrotic spots were developed with shot holes.

  • Field bean (Lablab purpureas L.) is one of the most important leguminous vegetables grown for its tender fleshy green pods, shelled green seeds and also dry beans. Prior to consumption, field beans are subjected to soaking which causes important changes in their physical, frictional and aerodynamic properties. Several engineering properties of fresh field beans and soaked beans (for 4 h, 8 h and 12 h soaking time) were evaluated. Standard methods were followed to investigate changes in properties of fresh and soaked field beans.

  • Effective surface sterilization and shoot regeneration protocols for Clinacanthus nutans are described. Nodal segments of C. nutans were sterilised by single- and double-stage sterilisation methods. In the double-stage method, explants were soaked in Plant Preservative Mixture (PPM) at various concentrations (0, 1.25, 2.50, 5.0 µL/mL).

  • The ban imposed on the usage of synthetic-dyes has led to the reinvention of natural-dyes throughout the world. Today, the faded antiquity is unveiling due to the concern manifested globally for saving the environment from pollution. In this experiment the dried Acacia nilotica pods and degummed mulberry-silk yarn were used. The powdered Acacia nilotica (5, 10, 15, 20g) was soaked overnight in different M.L.R (1:20, 1:30, 1:40) to optimize the dye-concentration and it was extracted by aqueous-method. Based on the reflectance and colour-strength, 10g dye-concentration, 1:30 M.L.

  • In this study, raisin was produced from pre-treated grapes by tray drying method. Grapes were cleaned and soaked in a different type of solutions such as potassium carbonate, olive oil, soy lecithin, and sugar concentration for different immersion time. The pre-treated grapes were then dried in a hot air tray drier at 50°C and airflow 1.0 m/s. Results showed that drying time was varied for pre-treated grapes. The shortest drying time of 61 h) was obtained for those grapes which were dipped in 6.7 % potassium carbonate solution for immersion time of 5 min.

  • ‘Seed balls’ are prepared by non-governmental organizations and enthusiastic school children to trees grow trees rapidly for ecosystem restoration. However, there is immense scope for technically improving the seed balls by ensuring the quality of seeds as well as media; further preparing cuboid structures, instead of ball like structure has immense scope in facilitating rooting of the newly emerging seedlings. Against this back drop, a series of experiments were conducted to standardize the seed coating technique, seed priming method and appropriate media for making seed cubes.

  • Shelling is a fundamental unit operation during oil extraction of snake gourd seed oil. Lack of proper and efficient method of shelling the seed has been identifying as a major problem in the production and utilization of snake gourd seed oil. Currently manual method is popular which is cumbersome, time consuming and not efficient for the process. Seed pretreatment is required prior to shelling operation for some crops like snake gourd. Effect of hydrothermal pretreatment was evaluated on the shelling efficiency, percentage unshelled and percentage broken of the seed.

  • Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), commonly known as garbanzo beans, are one of the most commonly consumed legumes in all over the world. Being one of the most nutritional elements of the human diet, chickpea contained various antinutritional compounds, including trypsin inhibitors, chymotrypsin inhibitors, phytic acid, tannin, condensed tannin and alpha amylase inhibitors which hampered the utilization of the nutrients by people. These antinutritional factors also hinder the in-vitro digestibility of both protein and starch.
