Major part of Indian economy is contributed by agriculture and its allied sector. Around 56 per cent of population directly or indirectly depends upon agriculture. The GDP contribution of the agriculture and allied sector is 17.2 per cent, but this sector is facing many challenges to flourish. Out of these challenges lesser crop productivity and inefficient use of fertilizers are the main challenges faced by Indian farmers. Till now, fertilizer recommendations for different crops are made on the basis of agronomical practices and not on the soil test basis.

More fertilizer doesn't always mean a higher crop production, if there isn't the right mix of nutrients, water and soil health conditions. Soil Health Card (SHC) assessment provide soil nutrient status of land holding of each farmer and advise corrective dosage of major fertilizers, micronutrient and soil amendments to maintain soil health and obtain a better yield.

Soil test based nutrient management has emerged as a key issue in efforts to increase agricultural productivity and production since optimal use of nutrients, based on soil analysis can improve crop productivity and minimize wastage of these nutrients, thus minimizing impact on environmental leading to bias through optimal production. Governments do efforts towards these through Soil Health Cards. The present study was conducted in Navsari district of South Gujarat region. All the taluka were selected for the present study.

Soil is one of the elements required for farming as it provides nutrients to the plants. Healthy soil containing all the elements for growth and development of crop and on the other hand soil deprived of one or more elements either reduces production or degrades quality of crops. Proportion and quantity of macro and micro nutrients refers to the soil health. As far as agriculture production is concerned, soil health plays a vital role in ensuring sustainable production with optimizing the utilization of fertilizers and reducing its wastage.

The basic objective of soil testing programme is to give farmers a service leading to better and more economic use of fertilizers and soil management practices for increasing agricultural production. Now a day’s consumption of fertilizer by farmer is higher than actual requirement. The farmers do not follow the soil testing technique.
