Studying the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) is important for understanding the carbon stabilization into different pools. Thus, a 25-year old experiment was used to assess the impact of double rice cropping system with addition of organics and grades of fertilization on labile carbon pools and crop yield sustainability in an Inceptisol in southern India. The total water stable aggregates (WSA) in the experimental soils ranged from 70.4 to 94.9% under different treatments.

The application of farmyard manure (FYM) in conjunction with inorganic fertilizers significantly increased yield attributes and yield of rice. Application of FYM improved available nutrients, porosity, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and aggregation of soil and reduced bulk density. Inorganic fertilizers in conjunction with FYM improved quality parameters of rice.

The surface (0-15 cm) soil samples were used for analyzing the soil properties. The soil properties were determined using soil analytical methods given by Jackson (1973). Organic carbon content determined by wet digestion method of Walkley and Black, available nitrogen (N) by Kjeldahl’s method, available phosphorous (P) by Bray and Kurtz method and available potassium (K) by flame photometric method. The data collected on various parameters have been statistically analysed as per the method of Panse and Sukhatme (1978).

A field study was carried out on Alluvial soils of Varanasi to analyse the short term impacts of replacing mineral by organic fertilizers on the physico-chemical properties and enzyme activities relevant for soil fertility and crop production. Three types of fertilization regimes were tested viz., no fertilizer, conventional as 100% RDF by inorganic fertilizer and combined integrated fertilizer in which 70% RDF with 30% of the nitrogen were supplied by either FYM or pressmud or vermicompost or combination of these two or all.

The potential contribution of trees to soil improvement is one of the major assets of agroforestry in general and more specifically agroforestry lands. Agroforestry systems are often mentioned as type of sustainable agriculture. However, long term studies on the sustainability of this land use do not exist. The study was conducted at Agroforestry Research Farm, Nagpur to know the soil nutrient status of teak and bamboo plantations and to evaluate the soil nutrient status in agroforestry research farm which was compared with cultivable land.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif season 2015 in alluvial soil at farmer field, in village Loharapur, Varanasi, to study the soil microbial biomass, dynamics and selected enzyme activities as influenced by farm yard manure and inorganic fertilizer. The soil microbial biomass carbon; nitrogen and phosphorous was improved significantly with the different treatments. Highest soil biomass carbons, nitrogen, phosphorous were recorded with the combined application of inorganic nutrients and farm yard manure (T7) over the remaining other treatments.

Phosphorous is one of the most abundant metallic element found in the earth’s crust and present in soils in both organic and inorganic forms. Though it is present in high concentration, only 0.1% of the total P is available to plant because of poor solubility and its fixation in soil with other metallic elements in the soil such as Ca, Al, Fe to form calcium phosphate, aluminum phosphate and ferrous phosphate and thus becomes unavailable to plants.

A study was undertaken during 2017-18 to identify the distribution of forms of carbon and carbon stock in different land management units (LMUs) of Kanginhal sub-watershed in Gadag district of Karnataka. Horizon-wise soil samples were collected from each LMU and analyzed for organic carbon, water soluble carbon, active carbon, inorganic carbon and total carbon. Organic carbon, water soluble carbon and active carbon were decreased with depth in all the LMUs, whereas inorganic and total carbon did not follow any definite trend.

The average concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in organic manure plus inorganic fertilizer treatments (NP+S and NP+FYM) in 0–60 cm depth were increased by 64.9–91.9%, 42.5–56.9%, and 74.7–99.4%, respectively, over the CK treatment. Accumulation of crop residues and organic matter in the surface layer under conservation tillage creates favourable feeding conditions and also provides physical protection to various soil organisms, thereby increasing their abundance as well as diversity.

This work focused on monitoring CO2 production, microbial growth and residual hydrocarbon concentration during bioremediation experiments performed on laboratory soil microcosms. A natural soil was artificially contaminated with hexadecane and adjusted with inorganic nutrients to stimulate biodegradation. Microbial growth, CO2 production and residual hexadecane were periodically monitored at different soil water contents ranging from 0.15 to 0.25 g water g -1 of dry soil and at different temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 oC.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of integrated application of inorganic fertilizer (NPK) and farmyard manure (FYM) on soybean grain nutrient uptake and yield. We performed field experiments with treatments including 100% NPK, 150% NPK, 100% NPK+FYM and control (without fertilizer), and soil properties and plant parameters assessed. Greater effects on soil electric conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC), Soil N were recorded with treatments.

Lecture 5 - Populations and ecosystems (continue). In chapter students explored: Their own plot of land, a tiny section of an ecosystem. They should have catalogued the organisms that live in it and the physical environment that provides the resources organisms need to survive; These resources include water; soil; the appropriate temperature; gases, such as carbon dioxide and oxygen; organic and inorganic nutrients; sunlight; and shelter. they should have observed that organisms in an ecosystem may cooperate or compete for these resources and that these interactions can vary.
