Solid decomposition

The purpose of this thesis is to study and synthesize BiMO materials (M = V,Ti,Sn) by microwaveassisted chemical method, hydrothermal method, sol-gel method and evaluate their physical properties. The synthesized materials (Bi2Sn2O7 and Bi2Ti2O7) were investigated the photocatalytic activity in the decomposition of RhotaminB (RhB) under visible light.

One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. However, the technology has some limitations with regard to its purification system. The commonly used sand and gravel filter is very prone to clogging and its cleaning is not an easy job. At the same time, the alternative upward flow mesh filter needs further improvement in cleaning efficiency and some hassle free drain cum back washing mechanism. In upward flow mesh filter system, which creates anaerobic condition will give foul smell.

The present study was to determine the conversion of six different solid waste materials viz. kitchen waste, paddy straw, leaf litters, Azolla plant, Cyathula plant and mixed sawdust from local mills into vermicompost and their yield potential by using earthworm species Eisenia foetida. 5 kg dry weight of each waste material were mixed with cow dung and allowed to undergo decomposition. The maximum yield of vermicompost were recorded from the leaf litters (3.937 kg dry wt.) followed by Azolla plant (3.655 kg dry wt.). A total of 10 samples were collected from Agricultural waste dump sites from various areas of Ladakh and 12 isolates of bacteria were isolated using Nutrient Agar medium. The optimal cultural conditions, microbiological characteristics, biochemical characteristics, antagonistic and synergistic activities within the strains and production of extracellular enzymes of the bacterial strains were documented. Colonies were isolated, cultured and characterized by gram staining and biochemical tests. Six isolates were found to be gram negative while 4 were gram positive.

Enzyme industrial wastes viz. multiple effect evaporator salts, primary sludge, filter press feed were evaluated for their phytotoxic effects under laboratory conditions to understand their potential to use as a nutrient medium for supporting plant growth. It was found that the industrial waste-water extract recorded lower contents of essential nutrients and the presence of heavy metals viz. Ni and Cd. Germination studies revealed the inhibitory effects of industrial waste-water extracts on percentage and rate of seed germination and length of plumule and radicle.
