The aim of the present work was that of producing low molecular weight chitosans that have higher solubility and can remain protonated at physiological pH, thus enhancing the antimicrobial action. This was achieved by reacting acid hydrolysed low molecular weight chitosan with 2-bromoethyleneamine hydrobromide or Fmoc-Lys(Fmoc)-OH to elicit N-(2-ethylamino)-chitosan and N-2(2,6-diaminohexanamide)-chitosan polymers.

Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in chemostat mode and harvested on a semi-continuous basic with 50% of broth volume every two days, giving the highest biomass yield. The flocculation efficiency of microalgae using chitosan depended on dose use, quality of chitosan such as degree of deacetylation (DD) and solubility. The flocculation efficiency was 99% after 30 minute, and 95% after 10 minute for DD of 87% and 89.8%, respectively.

A great interest towards investigating bactericidal properties of nanoparticles as an alternative to antibiotics has been initiated. Chitosan based nanoparticles (Ch-CuNPs) were prepared by use of water soluble chitosan solution (1.0 %) with CuSO4.5H2O (10 mM) and pomegranate aril extract (1.4 %) under magnetic stirrer for 24 h at room temperature. Viscous aqueous solutions of chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were blended to enhance miscibility and avoid polymer phase separation. The mixtures were drop-casted and air dried to yield composite film materials that were characterized by equilibrium water uptake, physical stability in aqueous solution, and thermal stability. Chitosan/PVA blends have greater thermal stability, unique morphology, and reduced solubility in acidic solution, thus extending the useful pH range for chitosan as a sorbent material.

A new class of injectable, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel is reported. This hydrogel is derived from N-succinyl chitosan (SCS) mixed with water-soluble dialdehyde starch (DAS) without using a conventional chemical crosslinker. The hybrid hydrogel is formed owing to the Schiff’s base reaction between amine groups of SCS and dialdehyde groups of DAS to form ACH‚NA group. SCS, DAS, and SCS–DAS hybrid hydrogels were synthesized and then characterized by FTIR analysis spectroscopy.

Changes of the total phenolics, catechin, and antioxidant capacity of the berries coated with chitosan were delayed, while quercetin 3-galactoside and total quercetin were higher in the control treatment. Overall, fruits coated with chitosan had greater external adequacy than untreated ones.

Abstract: Shrimp chitin and chitosan with improved characteristics were isolated from black tiger shrimp waste pretreated with 0.04 M Salicylic acid for ten hours. The pretreated shrimp shells could be efficiently demineralized and deproteinized at ambient temperature using 0.680 M HCl and 0.620 M NaOH, respectively. The duration of the treatments was 8 hours, the ash and protein residues in the final chitosan were about 0.48% and 0.51% respectively; the viscosity was 4800 cps; the solubility was up to 98%.

The effect of chitosan, glucose and chitosan–glucose complex (CGC) on the microbial and postharvest quality of shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushroom stored at 4 ± 1 C for 16 days was investigated. Mushroom weight loss, respiration rate, firmness, ascorbic acid, total soluble solids, microbial and sensory quality were measured. The results indicate that treatment with CGC coating maintained tissue firmness, inhibited increase of respiration rate, reduced microorganism counts, e.g., pseudomonads, yeasts and moulds, compared to uncoated control mushroom.
