Sorghum downy mildew resistant

Corn ranks one of the four principal crops of the world. It has greater adaptability and is grown throughout the world, over a range of climatic conditions. Maize breeding programmes generally focus on yield improvement. However, several diseases are responsible for major economic losses in maize. Sorghum downy mildew is one of the most serious diseases in maize producing areas throughout the world. Although effective chemical measures are available, breeding resistant cultivars is more cost effective and environmentally safe alternative for controlling sorghum downy mildew.

The present investigation was carried out at Department of Millets, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India to identify the best performing Sorghum Downy Mildew resistant progeny for agronomical traits. The objective of this study was to identify the better per se performance of the resistant progeny.

The present experiment was carried out at Eastern Block of the Central Farm Unit, Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India to identify the best performing Sorghum Downy Mildew resistant progeny for agronomical traits. The objective of this study was to identify the better biometric performance of the resistant progeny.

An experiment was carried out during Rabi, 2013 at Eastern Block of the Central Farm Unit, Department of Agronomy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India to identify resistant progenies in BC3F1 population against sorghum downy mildew (SDM) incited by peronoclesropora sorghi. Sorghum downy mildew is one of the most serious diseases in maize producing areas throughout the world. P. sorghi (SDM) is a factor that limits maize production in several countries of Asia (Rifin 1983).
