Considering the importance of yellow mosaic disease of soybean and its impact on yield, the systematic studies were conducted regarding survey for the yellow mosaic disease incidence in major soybean growing districts of Western Maharashtra.

The field experiments carried out to study the effect of border crops and insecticides against whitefly transmitted Yellow Mosaic Virus (YMV) in soybean during kharif 2015-16 and 2016-17. The treatment in combination of maize as border crop, seed treatment with thiamethoxam 30FS@5ml/kg seed, foliar application of imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 500ml/ha at 30-35 DAS and triazophos 40 EC @ 800 ml/ha at 45-50 DAS recorded lowest mean whitefly population (1.02 whiteflies/plant), which resulted in reduced YMV disease incidence (14.63%) and highest grain yield (19.42 q/ha) among treatments in soybean.

Under field conditions, Soybean mosaic virus infected plants exhibited the major symptoms viz., mosaic and mottling, crinkling, leaf puckering, dwarfing and younger leaves showed clear mosaic symptoms etc. The SMV Infected plants showed considerable reduction in plant height, pod length, grains per pod and pods per plant that leads to considerable reduction in the economic yield. The SMV was readily sap transmissible to cv. JS-335 when the inoculum was prepared in 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) and produce typical symptoms such as mottling, crinkling of leaves, leaf puckering and dwarfing.

Yellow Mosaic Virus disease (YMD) is a serious viral disease of soybean. Considering a very less attempt in studying the disease this investigation was carried out in order to arrive at the genetic basis of Yellow Mosaic Virus disease resistance of soybean. Crosses were made between highly resistant soybean varieties (DS 9712 and DS 9814) and two highly susceptible varieties (JS 335 and MAUS 609).

Among the viral diseases, Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is believed to have economic significance in India. Soybean mosaic is found in almost all soybean growing areas of India but usually in low to moderate intensity. Soybean plants infected with SMV were collected from different locations of Akola, Maharashtra, India. Symptoms of SMV in soybean include mosaic, rolling and puckering of foliage and chlorosis of older leaves with stunted growth. The SMV was readily sap transmissible to test plants.

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is the most prevalent viral disease in many soybean production areas. Due to a large number of SMV resistant loci and alleles, SMV strains and the rapid evolution in avirulence/effector genes, traditional breeding for SMV resistance is complex.

Forty-three genotypes of soybean were screened for soybean yellow mosaic virus disease (SYMV) under glasshouse condition using viruliferous whiteflies (Bemesia tabaci) through artificial virus inoculation method.
