Spam filtering

In this paper, we propose a multilayer neural network model for generating SpamAssassin rules which selects good features and optimize rule weights at the same time. The weighted rule set obtained from training this neural network can be applied directly in SpamAssassin. The experiments showed that our network is fast to train and the resulted rule set has comparable detection rates to previous rule generation methods.

This article presents an editorial perspective on the challenges associated with e-mail management for academic physicians. We include 2-week analysis of our own e-mails as illustrations of the e-mail volume and content. We discuss the contributors to high e-mail volumes, focusing especially on unsolicited e-mails from medical/scientific conferences and open-access journals (sometimes termed “academic spam emails”), as these e-mails comprise a significant volume and are targeted to physicians and scientists.

Fast flux networks represent a special type of botnets that are used to provide highly available web services to a backend server, which usually hosts malicious content. Detection of fast flux networks continues to be a challenging issue because of the similar behavior between these networks and other legitimate infrastructures, such as CDNs and server farms. This paper proposes Fast Flux Watch (FF-Watch), a mechanism for online detection of fast flux agents. FF-Watch is envisioned to exist as a software agent at leaf routers that connect stub networks to the Internet.

In the paper, we are going to present a spam email filtering method based on machine learning, namely Naïve Bayes classification method because this approach is highly effective. With the learning ability (self improving performance), a system applied this method can automatically learn and ameliorate the effect of spam email classification. Simultaneously, the ability of system’s classification is also updated by new incoming emails, therefore, it is very difficult for spammers to overcome the classifier, compared to traditional solutions.

We describe experiments with a Naive Bayes text classifier in the context of anti- spam E-mail filtering, using two different statistical event models: a multi-variate Bernoulli model and a multinomial model. We introduce a family of feature ranking functions for feature selection in the multinomial event model that take account of the word frequency information. We present evaluation results on two publicly available corpora of legitimate and spam E-mails.

Content-based approaches to detecting mobile spam to date have focused mainly on analyzing the topical aspect of a SMS message (what it is about) but not on the stylistic aspect (how it is written). In this paper, as a preliminary step, we investigate the utility of commonly used stylistic features based on shallow linguistic analysis for learning mobile spam filters. Experimental results show that the use of stylistic information is potentially effective for enhancing the performance of the mobile spam filters.
