In the first post-war decade, studies of the problems of the regional economy were developed in many countries based on the supply chain management. Prerequisites were created for the unification of regional scientists and a new attempt to synthesize theories of spatial and regional economics. At this stage, the avant-garde role was played by an American scientist, W. Isard.

In the study "Distribution, fate and ecological toxicity of some heavy metals in sediment: A case study from Day river downstream, Vietnam" the 50 surface sediment samples were collected along Day River downstream in July 2018 and January 2019 (25 sampling sites) to clarify the status, movement and potential risk of some heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cu, Cd and Hg). The receptor model of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to track the source types of these metals.

The research case studies took place in 26 countries, and the most prominent GIS software provider was Esri’s ArcGIS. The findings of the first literature review of the GIS applications in SCM showed that many business industries have not utilised the GIS capabilities, such as visualisation, spatial analysis, optimisation, and site research. However, GIS can significantly contribute to SCM decision making by providing answers to cost minimisation, supplier selection, facility location, SC network configuration and asset management.
