Ebook "The painted stork: Ecology and conservation" will cover the entire range of the Painted Stork--beyond its stronghold in India and Sri Lanka to other countries--E Asia as well. For the sake of comparison, relevant information will be included about the other species of storks--both solitary as well as colonial, of Asia, as well as those in other parts of the world. Certainly plenty of references will be made about the work done on the American Wood Stork.

Eucalyptus is one of the important plant species for paper pulp, fuel wood, and timber. In this study, a hybrid Eucalyptus, U16 line, was investigated for rapid in vitro propagation. The apical and adventitious shoots served as initial explants. These were free-disease symptoms that were collected for surface sterilization.

Cinnamomum parthenoxylon (Jack) Meisn is one of the valuable wood trees indigenous to the lowland tropical forests of Vietnam, which is in danger of extinction due to habitat fragmentation and overexploitation. Furthermore, the genetic diversity of this species has not been investigated to date. This study evaluated the genetic diversity in five natural populations from 101 individuals representing the C. parthenoxylon distribution range in natural reserves in North Vietnam using nine SSR markers.

S-adenosyl-l-homocysteine hydrolase (SAHH) is the only eukaryotic enzyme capable of S-adenosyl-lhomocysteine (SAH) catabolism for the maintenance of cellular transmethylation potential. Recently, biochemical and genetic studies in herbaceous species have obtained important discoveries in the function of SAHH, and an extensive characterization of SAHH family in even one tree species is essential, but currently lacking.

Bamboo is one of the important vegetative resources after plantation wood and is a major raw material for the forest product industry. In Vietnam, bamboo has become the main material for industrial manufacturing of round and laminated bamboo furniture and parquet. The bamboo Thyrsostachys siamensis with its Vietnamese name “Tam Vong” is one of the most common species growing mainly as a forest and also largely cultivated in the provinces Binh Thuan, Gia Lai, Kong Tum, Lam Dong and Tay Ninh.

The Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên) is a center of yellow camellia diversity in Vietnam and the world. The Central Highlands contains 18 of Vietnam’s yellow camellia species, accounting for 37% of yellow camellia species in Vietnam and 28% of yellow camellia species worldwide. Moreover, all 18 yellow camellia species in the Central Highlands are endemic to Vietnam.

A review of the oribatid mites of the genus Papillacarus Kunst, 1959 (Oribatida: Lohhmanniidae) in Vietnam, with remarks on the taxonomic status of P. arboriseta, is presented. The article provides also a key to nine species recorded in Vietnam, namely P. arboriseta Jeleva et Vu, 1987, P. benenensis Vu, Ermilov et Dao, 2010, P. cornutus (Sarkar et Subias, 1984), P. hirsutus (Aoki, 1961), P. indistinctus Ermilov, Anichkin et Wu, 2012, P. polygonatus Ermilov et Anichkin, 2011, P. polysetosus Ermilov, Anichkin et Wu, 2012, P. ramosus Balogh, 1961, and P. undirostratus Aoki, 1965.

Relatively little is known about the genomic basis and evolution of wood-feeding in beetles. We undertook genome sequencing and annotation, gene expression assays, studies of plant cell wall degrading enzymes, and other functional and comparative studies of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, a globally significant invasive species capable of inflicting severe feeding damage on many important tree species.

The inability of traditional methodologies and DNA analysis to readily perform wood identification to the species level for monitoring has stimulated research on chemotyping techniques. In this study, simple wood extraction of endangered rosewoods (Dalbergia spp), amenable to use in the field, produced colorful hues that were suggestive of wood species.

This study aimed to characterize the composition of soil mite populations (Acari: Mesostigmata) from 3 moss habitats (rock moss, bark moss, and soil moss). In total, 15 natural forest ecosystems were analyzed (3 deciduous forests, 5 beech forests, 1 fir forest, 5 spruce forests, and 1 mixed forest), from 8 counties in Romania. A total of 240 soil samples, 97 species, and 3018 individuals were analyzed. The samples were taken from April 2012 until October 2013.

Studying four species of red wood ants (Formica rufa, F. polyctena, F. aquilonia, F. lugubris), we examined nest morphometrics (height and diameter of anthills), spatial parameters (location of anthills of different sizes relative to each other), and the number of trails per colony in three regions of Ukraine and Russia: Kyiv region (877 anthills), the Urals (274 anthills) and Cis-Baikal (72 anthills). We have established a relationship between the number of anthills in the nest complex and the maximum parameters of the average height and diameter, as well as the average number of trails.

This study reported the experimental analysis on wood briquettes manufactured from Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) and beech wood (Fagus sylvatica), regarded as an economically valuable fuel source. The following properties of briquettes: physical properties (density and moisture content); chemical properties (heating value, namely calorific value, and ash content); thermal properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat); and mechanical properties (breaking strength).

Heterobasidion parviporum is an economically most important fungal forest pathogen in northern Europe, causing root and butt rot disease of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). The mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis and virulence of this species remain elusive. No reference genome to facilitate functional analysis is available for this species.

The basidiomycete Phanerochaete carnosa is a white-rot species that has been mainly isolated from coniferous softwood. Given the particular recalcitrance of softwoods to bioconversion, we conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis of P. carnosa following growth on wood powder from one softwood (spruce; Picea glauca) and one hardwood (aspen; Populus tremuloides). P. carnosa was grown on each substrate for over one month, and mycelia were harvested at five time points for total RNA sequencing. Residual wood powder was also analyzed for total sugar and lignin composition.
