Transcriptome analysis identifies genes and co-expression networks underlying heat tolerance in pigs
Heat stress adversely affects pig growth and reproduction performance by reducing feed intake, weight gain, farrowing rate, and litter size. Heat tolerance is an important characteristic in pigs, allowing them to mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on their physiological activities.

Male infertility is a reproductive issue involving defects in the quantity and quality of sperm. Besides the exogenous elements such as harmful habits, pollution, genetic factors including disorders in a single gene, group of genes, or chromosomes, are the etiology causing infertility in men.

Cryopreservation is an efficient way to store spermatozoa and is closely associated with the quality of sperm after the freeze-thaw process. During freeze-thaw cycling, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced, and the effects of ROS on boar sperm during cryopreservation have not been identified.

Semen cryopreservation has become an essential tool for conservation efforts of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca); however, it is severely detrimental to sperm quality. Evidence has shown that antioxidants have the potential to reverse cryopreservation-induced damage in sperm.

This study aimed to estimate the effect of three concentrations (75 µg/mL, 150 µg/mL and 300 µg/mL) of the European raspberry (Rubus iadeus) on the selected quality parameters of bovine spermatozoa after 0h, 2h, and 24h of in vitro culture. Sperm motility was evaluated using the Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. The mitochondrial activity was detected by the metabolic (MTT) assay.

Cattle populations are highly amenable to the genetic mapping of male reproductive traits because longitudinal data on ejaculate quality and dense microarray-derived genotypes are available for thousands of artificial insemination bulls. Two young Nordic Red bulls delivered sperm with low progressive motility (i.e., asthenospermia) during a semen collection period of more than four months.

The incidence of poor semen quality and sub-fertility/infertility is higher in crossbred as compared to Zebu males. Several attempts have been made to understand the possible reasons for higher incidence of fertility problems in crossbred males, at sperm phenotype, proteome and genome level but with variable results.

Sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) is a transgenic technique involves transfer of the genes based on the spermability to bind spontaneously and internalize the exogenous DNA, and transport it into an oocyte during fertilization to produce genetically modified animals. Spermatozoa play a major role in transgenesis in virtually all species. Their ability to take up exogenous DNA molecules to transmit novel genetic information to the offspring after fertilization can be exploited.

A study was carried out on semen of nine healthy mature breeding bulls (3 each of Gir, Surti and Murrah breed) to evaluate the correlations of their fresh sperm quality attributes to those of frozen thawed semen assessed both by subjective method and objective technique using Biovis CASA. The ejaculates immediately after collection were evaluated for routine seminal attributes.

For improvement of genetic program in animal, artificial insemination (AI) with liquid or frozen semen and quality of semen plays a major role for it. Sperm cells have a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in their membranes, and they lack a significant cytoplasmic component containing antioxidants. Therefore, they are susceptible to lipid peroxidation by the action of the reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The laboratory examination of semen quality parameters is an indirect way of assessing male fertility. The objective of this research was to study the semen quality parameters of Large White Yorkshire (LWY) boar ejaculates, which had the minimum sperm progressive motility necessary for being selected for further processing. The pigs were maintained at the Centre for pig production and research, Mannuthy, Kerala. A total of 24 ejaculates were collected from seven boars using gloved hand technique.

The mean ± S.E. values of seminal attributes evaluated for assessing the quality of freshly ejaculated neat semen from four Hariana bulls has been estimated. In the present study mean ejaculate semen volume ranges between 3.35 ± 0.14 to 5.38 ± 0.20 ml. Semen mass motility (0-5 scale) ranges between 3.13 ± 0.08 to 3.69 ± 0.09. Sperm concentration varies significantly among the four Hariana bulls and ranges between 1633.50 ± 33.58 to 1806.25 ± 31.56 millions/ml. Present study indicated that the percent sperm progressive motility amongst four Hariana bulls range between 72.0 0 ± 1.21 to 78.

Numerous studies have identified specific body systems affected by the hazardous effects of the cigarette smoking particularly the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The effect of smoking on male reproduction has also been studied where semen quality was investigated in different cross-sectional studies including infertile patients with conflicting results. This article aimed to assess the relationship between smoking and male infertility.
