Spikelets per panicle
-
Balancing panicle-related traits such as panicle length and the numbers of primary and secondary branches per panicle, is key to improving the number of spikelets per panicle in rice. Identifying genetic information contributes to a broader understanding of the roles of gene and provides candidate alleles for use as DNA markers.

Analysis of variance indicated the existence of significant differences among the progenies for all the traits. Correlation co-efficients among grain yield and its fourteen attributing traits were estimated in two hundred F3 population of rice. The study revealed significant positive correlation of number of filled grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, total number grains per panicle, number of productive tillers per plant and 1000-grain weight with grain yield.

The investigation was carried out to estimate the component of genetic variability and associated parameters among 12 IRRI CMS lines and evaluated for morphological characteristics that influence outcrossing rate in hybrid rice. There was a marked variation in out crossing rate of CMS lines ranging from 18% to 45% under uniform weather conditions for all the CMS lines. Variation in plant height, number of panicle per plant and panicle length appeared to have an influence on outcrossing rate.

For the establishment of the distinctness among 31 accessions of Oryza glaberrima, eight morphological traits following Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) studied. Out of 31 accessions studied, two accessions viz., EC861804, EC861805 were found to be highly distinct as they possessed distinct traits namely purple split ligule, medium green leaves, erect flag leaf, presence of awn along with lodging tolerance indicating their usefulness as donors for crop improvement programmes. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all the characters studied.

A field experiment entitled “Effect of soil application of silicon on growth and yield attributes of rice (Oryza sativa L.) was conducted in Kharif season 2017-18. Soil application of silixol granules was given at the time of mid-vegetative, mid-reproductive and mid-ripening stages of rice. The experiment was arranged as randomized block design with four treatments which replicated thrice.

Twenty one genotypes were grouped into eight clusters based on D2 values for 11 characters. From the inter cluster D2 values of the eight clusters, it was found that the highest divergence occurred between cluster II and VI followed by cluster I and V, cluster IV and VIII, cluster V and VI, cluster V and VIII and cluster IV and V suggesting that the crosses involving varieties from these clusters would give wider and desirable recombination.

Productivity of rice is negatively affected by drought. Morpho-physiological traits are key for plant adaptation under water stress condition. This study was conducted with the objective to study the 49 local land races of rice including checks in field and PVC pipes for screening drought tolerant genotypes based on their yield performance and the effect of various physiological traits associated with drought tolerance were studied. Results revealed significant yield decline in almost all the genotypes studied under drought condition as compared to irrigated condition.
