  • In the present study, an attempt has been made to identify genetically divergent promising lines and their F1 progenies, so as to select the potential parents for breeding programme to attain the anticipated improvement in fruit yield per plant of sponge gourd either by crossing two dissimilar parents to get heterotic F1 or by making single cross, three way cross, double cross and selfing of crosses (F1) obtained by the divergent parents of sponge gourd.

  • The present study was conducted with the objective to find out the effects of general and specific combining ability. The study comprised F1 hybrids developed through diallel mating design (excluding reciprocals) with the crosses of 9 diverse lines of sponge gourd. The F1 hybrids and their parents were evaluated for two consecutive years. The observations were recorded on growth and yield attributes.

  • The present investigations were carried out to estimate the genetic components of variation for yield and its contributing traits in sponge gourd. Genetic components D^ , H^ 1 and H^ 2 were significant for days to first male flower anthesis, node number of first male flower, days to first female flower anthesis, node number of first female flower, fruit length, fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, main vine length and total yield except D^ in case of number of primary branches which indicate the importance of both additive and dominant gene effects in regulating these traits.

  • The present study was carried out on heterosis for fruit yield and yield related traits in sponge gourd. Fifteen hybrids of sponge gourd were developed using six parents in half diallel fashion were studied for estimation of heterosis for 10 yield contributing traits. Hybrids PSG-82 × PSG-07-04, PSG-07-04 × PSG-161 and PSG-07-04 × PSG-199 were found most promising for earliness and yield. These hybrids exhibited heterosis to the tune of 59.36, 48.45 and 43.85 per cent over their better parents and 81.58, 69.16 and 63.

  • A 10 x 10 diallel analysis excluding reciprocals in sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica (Roem.) L.) revealed highly significant mean squares due to genotypes for all characters except days to first picking and fruit girth. The mean square due to parents was highly significant for node to first female flower, number of primary branches per vine, ten fruit weight, fruit girth, fruit yield per vine and significant for node to first male flower.

  • A 10 x 10 diallel analysis in F1 generation excluding reciprocals in sponge gourd [Luffa cylindrica (Roem.) L.] was carried out to identify good combiners and best combinations along with its heterotic effect. Mean square due to GCA and SCA were significant indicated that both additive and non-additive type of gene effects played an important role in the inheritance of all these traits under studied with preponderance of non-additive gene action for all the traits except fruit length.

  • The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in sponge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed by crossing 8 × 8 diallel mating design (excluding reciprocal). Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in randomized block design (RBD). Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for growth, earliness and yields characters, which suggesting presence of wide genetic variability. The magnitude of standard heterosis was found in desirable direction for early and yield traits viz.

  • The present study was conducted to determine phenotypic performance, genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, diversity, correlation and path analysis for yield and seventeen yield attributing characters of forty five sponge gourd germplasm. PCV was higher than GCV for all the traits studied. High PCV and GCV were recorded for number of primary branches, number of fruiting nodes on main stem, sex ratio, fruits per plant and yield per plant. Thirteen characters showed high heritability coupled with high genetic advance.

  • In order to establish pure lines of sponge gourds containing aroma features, we selected the desirable inbred lines by using a self-pollinating method. The present study was performed to estimate the morphological traits and fruit quality of six sponge gourd inbred lines which generated at the 4 th generation of an aroma Luffa accession B29 under plastic house conditions.
