After nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, sulphur is the fourth nutrient, whose deficiency is widespread in India. Sulphur deficiency is observed primarily due to high crop yield and therefore higher rate of sulphur removal by crops, and lesser use of sulphur-containing fertilizers. Boron foliar sprays seemed to overcome the deleterious effects of drought by overcoming the drought-related molecular responses and consequently appeared to meliorate sunflower growth under insufficient water conditions.

The experiment consisted of three levels of nitrogen (90,120 and 150 kg ha1 ) with basal application of P2O5 and K2O each at 60 kg ha-1 and zinc at 15kg ha-1 (basal application) or 0.5% ZnSO4 (foliar spray) and inoculated with Azotobacter or Azospirillum. Highest number of cobs plant-1 , plant height, dry weight, grains cob-1 and grain yield was recorded in the plots treated with 150 kg ha-1 N + 15 kg ZnSO4 basal along with seed inoculation with Azospirillum 20 g per kg seeds.

Globally, micronutrient malnutrition alone affecting more than two billion people, mostly among resource-poor families in developing countries, with Zn, Fe, I and vitamin A deficiencies most prevalent. Approximately, five million children dies micronutrient malnutrition every year. Currently, micronutrient malnutrition is considered to be the most serious threat and global challenge to human kind and it is avoidable. Among different micronutrients, zinc and iron deficiency is a well-documented problem in food crops due to which crop yields and nutritional quality decreases.
