  • Emerging wheat stem rust races have become a major threat to global wheat production. Finding additional loci responsible for resistance to these races and incorporating them into currently cultivated varieties is the most economic and environmentally sound strategy to combat this problem.

  • Research to identify and characterize stem rust resistance genes in common wheat, Triticum aestivum, has been stimulated by the emergence of Ug99-lineage races of the wheat stem rust pathogen, Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), in Eastern Africa. The Montenegrin spring wheat landrace PI 362698 was identified as a source of Pgt resistance. This accession exhibits resistance to multiple Ug99-lineage and North American Pgt races at seedling and adult-plant stages.

  • Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) undergoes winter dormancy by sensing photoperiod and temperature changes. It transitions to winter dormancy in early fall following at the end of reproduction and exits dormancy in the spring.

  • A field experiment was conducted at Jammu, during the spring season 2013 to evaluate the efficacy of tembotrione (42% SC) on nutrient removal by crop and weeds in spring maize. The experimental field was highly infested with Cyperus rotundus, Cynodon dactylon, Phyllanthus niruri and Digitria sanguinalis. Post emergence application of tembotrione @ 120 g/ha at 15 DAS resulted in significantly highest NPK uptake by grain and stover of crop and lowest NPK uptake by weeds which was at par with post emergence application of tembotrione @ 120 g/ha at 30 DAS and two hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS.

  • Heat stress due to prolonged high ambient temperature during critical growth stages is a serious threat to crop production worldwide. Though being a C4 crop, maize has relatively wider adaptation, however, weather extremes such as heat stress is challenging its threshold limits. There is an absolute requirement of heat tolerant cultivars in the present condition as climate change has a become reality.

  • Freedom of expression has surfaced in large parts of the world, particularly the newly independent nations and the countries that remained in isolation, along with the spread of democracies in those countries. With the rise of free expression of views often contesting with one another, conflicts of different kinds that were under suppression earlier, also emerged. Conflict in itself is considered neither good nor bad but it is judged by its outcome. Study of conflict, specifically the causes behind it relating to power struggle, economic competition, is important for achieving peace.

  • Some parallel disk gate valves used in high pressure systems are made with an integral bonnet vent and bypass line. A three-way valve is used to position the line to bypass in order to equalize pressure across the disks prior to opening. When the gate valve is closed, the three-way valve is positioned to vent the bonnet to one side or the other. This prevents moisture from accumulating in the bonnet. The three-way valve is positioned to the high pressure side of the gate valve when closed to ensure that flow does not bypass the isolation valve.

  • Despite the deterioration of the economic situation in 2012, fiscal deficits are still expected to fall to 3½% of GDP in the EU and 3¼% in the euro area on the back of consolidation plans implemented in the course of the year. The available information from budgets for 2013 points to continued, though somewhat slower, consolidation with headline deficits projected at 3¼% of GDP in the EU and 2½% in the euro area. A moderate decrease in the pace of fiscal consolidation is also reflected in the structural improvements of the budget balance, which in the EU is...

  • Sixth, this study can claim several new findings. This is the first mutual fund study to expose the evidence of a liquidity premium and emphasise the inclusion of including a liquidity factor in the fund performance measure (Chapter 6). This study also provides new findings about emerging markets. In Chapter 4, the study reveals the style of fund managers in these markets and shows that they rely on medium capitalisation strategy. This chapter also relates the sensitivity of data frequency to the fund performance.

  • I always wanted to design a spring shawl, so here is what finally emerged: Some sunrays at the centre top; below, birds high up in the sky flying north after a long winter, and on the bottom the first blossoms appear, lots of them. To finish, I added a nice and easy-to-knit lacy edging. Size: 190 x 90 cm Materials: 100 grams of lace wool, 600 metres (660 yds), 5 mm (US8) needles, tapestry needle, markers if you prefer to use them; you should mark the centre stitch Gauge: 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”) Stockinette, after blocking: 16 stitches x...

  • Military academies aim to educate for leadership. As a nation, we hope that even those graduates who do not serve full careers in the military will eventually assume positions of leadership in other institutions. The essays in this volume are a complete collection of the distinguished lectures in ethics given at the U.S. Air Force Academy from the fall of 1988 to the spring of 1999.

  • A useful aspect of freshwater sponge biology, particularly for the purposes of an undergraduate lab module, is the fact that they enter diapause as small gemmules. Gemmules are overwintering balls that are produced in the late summer/early fall by the adult sponge. They are the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Adult tissue disintegrates around the gemmule during the winter, and a new sponge emerges from the gemmules in the spring. The newly developing sponge exits the gemmule from a micropyle, and then quickly spreads around the gemmule. In a...

  • Applying much more phosphorus fertilizer and manure than crops can use builds up phosphorus in soil. After continuous over-fertilization, agricultural fields become a persistent reservoir for phosphorus that ends up polluting water bodies. Recent USGS study found that in the agricultural Midwest, many streams have their highest nitrogen concentrations in the spring, peaking in April-May.

  • Life history theorists assume that the physiological and behavioural characteristics of organisms represent an approximate solution to the problem of optimizing the allocation of time, energy and resources between somatic, mating and parenting effort. The particular solution will depend on the organism’s environmental niche as well as its evolutionary history. In general, effort allocated to reproduction will decrease an organism’s ability to survive, grow and develop. Conversely, effort allocated to survival, growth and development will decrease reproduction.

  • The first edition of the Handbook of Micro/Nanotribology was published in the Spring of 1995. Soon after its publication, the first-of-a-kind monograph became a reference book for the novice, as well as experts, in the emerging field of micro/nanotribology. Since the field is evolving very rapidly, we felt that the monograph needed a second edition. The second edition is totally revised. The scope of the first edition has been expanded. In the first part, Basic Studies, two new chapters on AFM Instrumentation and Tips and Surface Forces and Adhesion have been added.
